Homework 5

The document provides instructions for homework assignments involving calculating pH at various points in titration curves. For the first problem, students are asked to calculate the pH for different volumes of strong acid and base added and to plot and comment on the titration curve. For the second problem, students are tasked with finding the pH for different volumes of weak acid added to a weak base, drawing various graphs, and commenting on the titration curve.

ENVE 102 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY

2019-2020 SPRING SEMESTER

HOMEWORK #5

Assigned: April 27, 2020 (Monday)

Due: May 4 2020 (Monday)
(Online Submission via ODTUCLASS)

Note 1: Please provide a summary of data you use when plotting titration curves as a
table.
Note 2: When writing the equilibria and mass balance expressions, do not forget to
write the specific equilibrium constant and the total concentration value, respectively,
on the other side of the equality.
Note 3: Do not forget to label your axes and specie names on each line on the graph.
Show the solution point, pH, pKa, the points that you read the concentrations etc. Also, if
you are making assumptions either calculate the error or show on the graph that the
assumption is correct.

1. (50 pts) Calculate the pH when the following volumes of 0.4 M KOH are added
into 100 mL of a 0.1 M HNO3 solution. Both KOH and HNO3 are strong
electrolytes.

a) 0 mL, b) 15 mL, c) 22 mL, d) 24 mL, f) 24.9 mL, g) 25 mL,

h) 25.1 mL, i) 26 mL, j) 28 mL, k) 40 mL, l) 75 mL,
m) Plot the titration curve, n) Comment on the important points of the curve

2. (50 pts) One liter of a weak base (B) solution (pKa=10.2) at a concentration of
10-1.8 M is titrated with 1 M of HBr. Find the pH when:

a) 0 mL
b) 4 mL of acid added
c) 8mL of acid added
d) 12 mL of acid added
e) 16 mL of acid added
f) 20 mL of acid added
g) 50 mL of acid added
h) 50 mL of 10 M HBr (concentrated) is added

Additionally;

i) Draw pH vs pC graph to find equilibrium pH values,

j) Calculate the equivalent fractions (f) for each case,
k) Draw titration curve (f vs pH),
l) Comment and discuss the important points on the titration curve.
