Decimals

Decimal fractions are fractions with denominators that are multiples of 10. They are expressed with a decimal point rather than a fraction bar. Numbers to the left of the decimal point represent whole numbers, and numbers to the right represent fractional parts. Decimal fractions can also be obtained by dividing the numerator of a standard fraction by its denominator. The rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals are similar to those for whole numbers, but require proper placement of the decimal point in the answer.

Decimals

A decimals fraction is a fraction with a denominator of

10 or any multiple of 10. It differs from a commo Example:
fraction in that the denominator is not written but rather 1. 0.873 round off to nearest hundredths = 0.87
expressed by proper placement of the decimal point. 2. 0.98 round off to nearest tenths = 1.0
3. 3.45 round off to nearest tenths = 3.4
All whole number are to the left of the decimal point.
All decimal fractions are to the right of the decimal
point. Fraction to Decimals
Just divide the top of the fraction by the bottom, and
read off the answer!

Rounding Off of Decimals: Equal, Greater Than, Less Than, and Less Than
Decimal fraction or simply decimals are simply o = Equal
fractions whose denominator is a multiple of 10 such as o > Greater Than
10, 100, 1000, etc. since we are using numbers in base o < Less Than
10, it is equivalent to moving the decimal point 1 place
towards the left. Example:
1 1. 0.2 > 0.15
 Thus can be express in decimals as 0.1 and 2. 0.15 < 0.2
10 3. 0.2 = 0.2
read as tenths.
4. 0.57 > 0.549
5. 3.05 < 3.5
Two places is read as hundredths since it is divided by
6. 4.1 > 4.01

7. 1.3 = 1.30

written as or simply written 0.212.

The Rules in Rounding off numbers are as
follows:
1. If the figure to be drop is less than 5, then the
preceding number is retained.
2. If the figure to be drop is more than 5, then the
preceding number is added by 1.
3. If the figure to be drop is exactly 5, then the
preceding number retains of the number is even
and add 1 if the preceding number is odd.
ADDITION OF DECIMALS
Procedures:
1. Write down the numbers, one under the other,
with the decimal points lined up
2. Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length.
3. Then add, using column addition, remembering to
put the decimal point in the answer

zeros as needed.

DIVISION OF DECIMALS
 When dividing decimals, set up the problem the
same way as for division of whole numbers. If the
divisor is a whole number, the divided decimal is
