ONLINE WRITTEN TEST:
Online test which included three Sections with 20 questions in each section. Each section had its
own timer and the section was required to be completed in the given time only.
1. Aptitude- Easy but requires managing time. Two Data Interpretation Paragraphs (3 Questions
related to each paragraph) and others included questions from profit-loss, alligation, speed-time-
distance and the next in series types of questions.
2. Software- Questions from C, networking, basics of OOPs and data structures (sorting, linked
lists, queues, tree traversal, hashing) were asked.
From the result of written round it can be seen that sectional cut off was considered along with
total marks by Qualcomm. 20 students were shortlisted for interviews from B.tech and M.tech.
For interviews my only suggestion is ::: Confidence
Technical Interview 1:
Lasted for around 45-50 minutes. Started off with basic questions like - significance of gray
code, Bulb-Staircase question, One hot state encoding. This was followed by discussions on
FSMs , (FSM to indicate divisibility by 3 specifying your assumptions, if any), input and output
waveforms were drawn and the circuit was required to be made, decade counter using VHDL, a
few basic questions relating to VHDL, and reasons why I chose my counter reset pin as active
low and triggering to be negative edge triggered, problem of spikes in the counter. detailed
discussion on Interrupts in 8085,Assembly language code to multiply two 8 bit unsigned
numbers, basics of 8086 (addressing modes and flag architecture ),pipelining basics (Related to
my Project), Active and passive filters, Op-amps (Integrator, Differentiator and the related
problems), Cross section of two transistors in a CMOS gate and CMOS inverter characteristics.
Technical Interview 2:
Lasted for about 30 minutes. The interview started with a brief introduction of myself, certain
things in my CV and the reason of not going for higher studies. Then he started with synthesis of
a 4x1 mux using two 2x1 mux and logic gates, then he moved to discussions on MOSFETs-
types, characteristics (i/p and o/p) of N channel enhancement type mosfet, regions of operation,
cross section of Enhancement and Depletion NMOS and which is preferred and why, advantages
of CMOS logic family over MOS families, Baye's Theorem and a related question.
HR Interview:
Discussion on family background, 3 reasons why I should be selected, resume based questions,
plans for future studies, what did I know of the company and anything I wanted to ask about
company.
Note :The interviewers were nice, basics were mainly being focussed. Don't answer absurd if
you don't know an answer as you'll end up trapping yourself in a series of questions. Be
confident. Your resume is very important. Entire resume was scanned and almost everything
from resume was asked till the HR. Conveying your approach towards a problem to the
interviewer remains the most important part.
Technical 1:
1)what you learned at DKOP labs.
2)why you didn't use transistor level[switch level) modelling.
3)write a verilog program for example half adder.
4)what are reg and wire ...basic defference....
5)if i say that C has global and local variables then what will you say for VERILOG.
6)what is the difference b/w blocking and non blocking assignments.
7)draw AND gate using NMOS.......solution [1) using PTL.....[2) using N-block....sir wants the
solution with N block but firstly i gave PTL[pass transistro logic) that played a very impressive
role as according to his expression that circuit was new to him.
8)some dangerous questions.....from where actually capacitance comes...why we dont worry abt
inductance.
9)How a mobile charger works …I explained that ….then …...why voltage is in proprotional
relationship with number of turns.......i said that it is bcoz of a law used for transformers that
generated emf is proportional to frequency, number of turns and other factors…then he said again
why that law exist…….then I surrender :P and said i had basic electrical in 1st sem as a
formality and not as important subject of my branch..
10)Tell me abt your projects ..............the most important thing ....discuss as in detail as you
can .....take as much time as you can .
HR
1)feedback abt test .
2)tell me abt your family back ground.
3)how much difficulties you have faced when you came to this college bcoz of
your hindi back ground.
4)how much your salary matters to your family.
5)why you dont want to go for m.tech.
6)what will be thought process if i make you a leader of a group of 5 people ..you have to do a
project within 10 days.
7)what is that one thing bcoz of which you are here in this cabin at this moment.
8)do you want to ask something ........
1. what will be my role in Q if i got selected ,,, i m asking this question to brush my that part
of the knowledge which is going to be used most.
2. Is there something superior junior in Q banglore and Q sandiego.
3. Q is delievering so huge number of chips so we are not going for fabrication as we need it
again again.
Technical 2:
1)Produce a waveform with a frequency which is half of the given waveform ....
2)Implement it with VERILOG.
3)I used reset input additionally inside always block then he asked which type of reset it
is...synchronous and asynchronous....obviously synchronous as it is going to be operated @
posedge clock
and D input ...as mentioned in sensitivity list of always block....always @ (posedge clock, D).
4)Blocking and non blocking assignments ......a very good question
B=#5 A, C=#3 B,,,,,,,,B<=#5 A, C<=#3 B, when will B & C change if A changes 5 after time
unit from the starting of simulation.
5)Synthesizable && Non-synthesizable blocks....difference and examples.
6)Explain the function of TTL.........i said that i have not studied logic family...actually i want to
learn TTL but kbhi time hi nahi aa paya ....he said that is it in 3rd sem ..i said actually Logic
family has
not a specific subject in our college but there was just a single lecture with the course of DE.
7)Explain your projects .
8)Explain working of CMOS......which terminals are joined together to form that circuit.
9)Draw the circuit of High pass filter ...explain the functioning...i have drawn the active high
pass filter with op-amp having capacitor C1 at the optput terminal.
10) Now he insert an addtional capacitor C2 in feedback loop ...now explain the behaviour for all
three cases
1) C1 > C2......
2) C2 > C1.....
3) C1= C2......
findout the expression of output voltage then convert it into real amplitude form now you see the
behaviour of circuit with the given conditions and see when it works as
low pass,,,when high pass,,...when all pass..
11) Qualcomm's classical puzzle :::: :D :P one couple has two kids , one of them is girl ...what is
the probability of other one's of being a girl too......1/3
Note: Portions of C, Verilog, aptitude and DE were relatively easy. So the deciding factor was
knowledge of microprocessor (both 8085 and 8086) and speed of solving questions.
Personal Interviews:
VLSI Profile: (2 tech interviews, 1 HR)
In first interview, he started with introduction, then moved on to projects and shortly discussed
one. Then he asked easy but conceptual DE questions. He also asked about Set up and hold time
violations and how to remove it. Then he asked me if I have studied DSP and asked me 2-3
Communication related questions like sampling, PCM, quantization noise etc. Then he asked
about Cache memory concepts. There were some Op-Amp differentiator related questions also.In
second interview he started with introduction and then he asked famous bulb and XOR gate
puzzle. Then he asked some gate conversions. (Try to look involved in the questions even if you
know the answer.) Then he asked questions about Op-Amp Integrator. These questions were
relatively difficult. He also asked to write an ALP for multiplying a number by 4 by three
methods. Besides area of interest, questions from DE, Op-Amp and Communication were also
asked. Note: All interviews were one-to-one. Interviewers were friendly and helping. In all the
interviews I was asked about higher studies. You have to convince them that you will not leave
the company in any circumstances (especially HR).You will have to tell a lot of lies during HR
interview, be prepared for that.Interviewers will give you chance to ask them some questions,
you can ask them about their future projects, work environment, your personal growth etc.
• Be confident in your AOI.
• Strengthen your basics.
• Have some nice projects and prepare them thoroughly.
• Show your interest in the company.

Q. Sir, how are you finding the internship? Please share the experience that
you’ve had so far.
A. The internship here at Qualcomm is amazing. The work environment is great
and the people here are extremely friendly and eager to help. In fact, in a recent
statistic, Qualcomm was rated among the top 3 companies to do an internship in,
along with Facebook and Google. So it has been a great experience so far.
Q. What should the students going into the third year do in the summer
vacations to prepare for the internship?
A. The most important thing is to learn new concepts while brushing up on your
already learnt subjects. Doing an internship after the second year did not help in
my case as I could not learn much and most of my friends had similar internships
which did not help much for the future. Instead, learn new concepts and study
about those fields or subtopics which have not been included in your syllabus,
but may be widely used today. Try working on a research or technical project.
Particularly for an interviewer: when he comes in and sees your CV and knows
which projects you have worked on, he automatically understands your skill set
and it does create a good impression.
Q. What was the selection process for the internship?
A. So the selection process in Qualcomm was as follows: We first had a written
paper of one and a half hours followed by a technical interview which was then
followed by an HR interview. The written paper comprised of three sections:
Aptitude, Coding and Electronics (Technical), each for half an hour and all three
being multiple choice. Attempt all the questions since there is no negative
marking.
The aptitude section is pretty easy; all it requires is a cool, calm and confident
mind to crack it.
When we heard of the next section, which is the Coding section, it initially
became a point of worry for many of us ECE students who were not proficient
with coding, including me. However, I would like to tell all the students that the
Coding section is EASY AND LOGICAL. They basically give pseudo codes,
which are, for example, if-then or for constructs; something that can easily be
deduced with logic and once again, a calm mind. No particular language is
required to be known and since the ECE students have a basic coding
experience with MATLAB in their 3rd Semester SNS Lab, pure logic should get
them through.
As of what I experienced, in the Coding and Aptitude Sections, almost every
student was at par. What gives students an edge over the others is the Technical
Section. In this section, all the questions pertain to what you’ve already studied in
your previous semesters. Brush up well on those subjects and you’re good to go.
Basic questions are asked and elimination works very well, and we being experts
at elimination, having given IIT and AIEEE entrances, would definitely do
wonders in such questions.
Following that, we had the Technical Interview. You should be technically sound
and should be able to support what you are saying. If you know exactly what you
are saying, the interview will go well. A lot of things matter in an interview. From
your first impression to every answer you give. The smallest of details have some
meaning for the interviewer, so do take care.
Finally, the selected students go for the HR interview. This is fairly easy to crack,
and from my year no one was rejected in this round. Only if you sound really bad
to them would they reject you in this round, otherwise you’re good to go.
Q. What particular subjects from the last 4 semesters should students
prepare that are particularly useful for selection?
A. Okay, so the last 2 semesters are extremely important, and the following
subjects must be covered:
1. Analog Electronics and Analog Integrated Circuits.
2. Digital Electronics and Digital System Design.
3. Computer Architecture.
4. Signals and Systems and Communication Systems
All these subjects are extremely important, particularly the first 3.
Electromagnetic Theory and Electronic Instruments and Measurements are not
required.
A word of advice for the juniors is that start preparing from right now. Qualcomm
informed us only 3 days prior to their arrival so you won’t get time then. Work on
these subjects from today itself since the Technical Paper is the hardest nut to
crack amongst all the rounds. A word of advice for EE and EEE students who sit
for Qualcomm: Do work on Digital, Computer Architecture and Signals and
Systems since they are not covered in your syllabus.
Q. Could you tell us some of the questions that you were asked in the
interview?
A. With Qualcomm, the interview was more of an interaction. The interview was
entirely based on technical questions. However, as I mentioned earlier, the
easiest of answers create the biggest of differences. The first question I was
asked was: “What are the subjects that you’ve studied so far?” Instead of reciting
them out semester wise like many students do, I mentioned: “Analog electronics,
Analog Integrated Circuits, Digital electronics, Digital System Design, Computer
Architecture….”.What this showed was that I’ve been able to relate the subjects
that have been taught in different semesters and that created a good impression.
And yes, please do not forget your subjects. That will certainly have a bad impact
on the interviewer.
The most important thing though, is that YOU DRIVE YOUR INTERVIEW.
DON’T LET THE INTERVIEWER DRIVE YOU. You should decide where your
interview is heading based on your strengths. For example, I was asked a very
basic question: “What is the difference between Analog and Digital
Communication?” Among the basic points that every student mentions, I
mentioned technical words that I knew well, such as Noise Margin, to support my
answer. As expected, their next question was on Noise Margin. But at the same
time, be relevant to whatever the interviewer is asking.
Be sure about what you know and what you don’t. Highlight your strengths and
know your weaknesses.
Q. Any other advice that you’d like to give to your juniors?
A. As I said before, be calm, composed and confident. That along with logic will
be enough to crack the Coding and Aptitude section. Having a sufficient and
complete knowledge of the previous semester subjects, particularly the ones I
mentioned, will be enough to get you through the Technical section too. And
once again, be calm and sure of what you say in the interview.
All the best!
SALIL ARORA:
Q. Sir, how are you finding the internship? Please share the experience that
you’ve had so far.
A. Within 2 weeks of my internship, I have started feeling like any other regular
employee here. Being a relatively small open company with a large industry
presence, it feels like a comfortable place to work in. It also gives a sense of
satisfaction when you realise that people here do give your work importance. We
do have theoretical knowledge but implementing that on real industrial project is
challenging and ‘Challenges are fun for us engineers’.
In short, I’m enjoying the work culture here.
Q. What should the third years do in the summer vacations to prepare for
the internship?
A. Try to find out the companies that are likely to offer internships and their time
of visit at our campus. Then look for your seniors who have got internships in
those companies and plan your preparations accordingly. Do try to work on
some research project in your interested field. Practical knowledge will help you
in interview. Students usually ignore practising aptitude for written test. But if you
want to gain advantage over your fellow mates, give aptitude equal importance.
Q. What was the selection process for the internship in ARM?
A. Cutoff was initially 75% but was reduced to 70% later. There was a written
paper comprising of two sections – Technical and Aptitude. Around 13 students
were selected for the Technical Interview round. Only 3 students (only 1 from
ECE, B.Tech) were shortlisted for HR round and they were finally selected.
Q. What particular subjects from the last 4 semesters should students
prepare that are particularly useful for selection?
A. Digital Electronics, Digital System Design, Computer Architecture and Basics
of Analog Electronics. If you are aiming for a VLSI profile, then these subjects are
the key to crack the internship interview.
Q. Could you tell us some of the questions that you were asked in the
interview?
A. My Technical Interview started off with very basic questions like drawing a D
flip flop, making it without using conventional J-K flip flop (Transmission gate
implementation- You will learn that in your VLSI course in 5 th Sem); counters-
synchronous and asynchronous; Difference in latch and Flip flop; energy band
diagram of p-n junction; MOSFETS and the working of a basic CMOS inverter.
Q. Any other advice that you’d like to give to your juniors?
A. For 3rd years, I would say that be prepared for the interviews as if you have
them tomorrow. You never know which company will surprise you by its arrival on
campus on a short notice. ARM wasn’t expected to come for internships. Some
students feel like only DRs can be recruited as on-campus intern and so don’t
apply for them. I would advise them not to do this. Aim for internships, try to get
an experience of the selection process but don’t get disheartened if you fail to get
it.
