ACTIVITY 1: Defining HCI

From reliable sources

1. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a multidisciplinary field of study focusing on the
design of computer technology and, in particular, the interaction between humans (the users) and
computers. While initially concerned with computers, HCI has since expanded to cover almost all
forms of information technology design.

2. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the study and planned design of human and computer
activities. HCI uses productivity, safety and entertainment to support and fulfil human-computer
activities and is applied to various types of computer systems, including air traffic control, nuclear
processing, offices and computer gaming. HCI systems are easy, safe, effective and enjoyable.

3. HCI (human-computer interaction) is the study of how people interact with computers and to
what extent computers are or are not developed for successful interaction with human beings. A
significant number of major corporations and academic institutions now study HCI. Historically
and with some exceptions, computer system developers have not paid much attention to computer
ease-of-use. Many computer users today would argue that computer makers are still not paying
enough attention to making their products "user-friendly." However, computer system developers
might argue that computers are extremely complex products to design and make and that the
demand for the services that computers can provide has always outdriven the demand for ease-of-
use.

Own definition
The Human-computer interaction is basically self-defined, which is of how technology and
humans interact with each other. It also focuses on services that provide support and entertainment to
its users. Lastly, it involves the development and application of principals, guidelines and methods to
support the design and evaluation of interactive systems.
