CRIM 1B
Module 8 Assignment

1.   Criminology is actually my second option, mainly because it is the last

available best pre-law course that I can pursue in our residence here in Pampanga. But
now upon entering the college, I had a new reason to pursue it. I will continue studying
criminology because it is interesting, convenient and what we need for a better society. I
also find the course challenging since it is quite puzzling to study cause and effects of
crime. The bonus is that I was able to develop more useful philosophies in life that
helped me see the world in another angle, now that I am exploring theories of biology,
psychology and sociology. As a future law enforcer and a lawyer, I hope that our
generation will be able to refresh the good practices of our services to the community to
prevent corruption of government officials. It is truly an honor to be a part of CCJE.

2.     A Filipino can practice Criminology outside the country, provided that the foreign
country allows them to research. In turn, there will be a reciprocation that aliens of that
specific country can also practice criminology here in the Philippines with the permission
to do so. This is made available because crime is dynamic, and diverse. Crime
conditions in various countries are not the same. And in order to apply the field in the
best way of studying it, there are instances when we need to be open to go beyond
greater extents and explore possibilities of crimes around the world that can be further
implemented in our local communities. Definitely, if I get the chance to explore
Criminology in different countries availing it, I’ll gladly grab and take it.

3.   Firstly, they are exempted from taking civil service examinations. Registered
criminologists may enjoy the priority given to them and will not be further required to
take any examinations in any law-enforcement or government agencies they desire to
apply. It may be from the Tri-Bureau (PNP, BFP, BJMP). If they desire to get government
positions in the criminal justice system (i.e. Police officer to Police superintendent,
criminal investigator and many others), they will be given the privilege as a
criminologist. Certainly, this mainly because of their expertise in the field as researchers
of crime, which is what the preceding agencies need more for safety, security and
implementing policies.

In addition to that, they are also protected with fraudulent acts be the law of RA
11131 given a few prohibitions. If someone attempts to use their seals, impersonates
them, fakes certification, or practices while being unauthorized, there will be a fine 100k-
500k (in peso), or an imprisonment of 2 years and 1 day to 6 years. It is notable that the
offender can also acquire both.

4.    It is a privilege because the job is honorable and a big duty to partake. As a future
government official, we commit and serve to the public. It is not a right because it is our
job to humble ourselves to the community and not just merely use our position for
power. Rather, it is a privilege because it is essential to the betterment of our
community, and will also benefit ourselves with proper discipline and mindset upon
studying and living it out our whole life. Certainly, our career is secured with this
profession.

5.     Criminology is unique because it is an interdisciplinary field that correlates to many

aspects of life. We study beyond the narrow concept of crimes which people thought is
the most basic thing. But we go to greater extents such as exploring various factors and
possibilities through studying various theories in the past and seeing if these are
applicable today in our modern society. It is an investigatory course with an aim to be
open to every circumstance that we may encounter in terms of crime. Unlike any other
courses, criminology is a broad concept because it is dynamic and changing over time,
which adds up to the challenge of its study.

6.   The first step is to check the qualifications. The examinee must be a Filipino citizen,
or a foreign national that has reciprocity of their country and Philippines in practicing
criminology. They must uphold good moral character as certified by their school or
barangay. In the case of foreign nationals, they must have certification from any
professional of good standing. They should also be a graduate of bachelor’s degree in
criminology as authorized by the government, provided that their educational institution
is dully recognized by the Commission of Higher Education. They must not have been
convicted of an offense.

By then, the following are the subjects of the board examination:

crim law & jurisprudence (20%)
law enforcement admin (20%)
criminalistics (20%)
crim detection & investigation (15%)
criminal sociology (15%)
correctional admin (10%)

The passing grade is 75% w/ no grade less than 60% in any of the given subjects. In
case an examinee gets to have at least 75% in the final grade, but has a subject below
60%, he will be deterred and required to retake the specific subject for a given time of 2
years from the date of examination, and shall obtain a grade not lower than 80%
thereof. If the examinee still failed, he/she shall retake the whole board exam. Failure to
have the obtaining grade in three or more subjects also means failure in the board
examination. If they failed five times, they shall refresher’s course before retaking.
7.     They can be law enforcers or government officials by applying in any of the Tri-
Bureau under DILG (PNP, BFP, BJMP) and acquire higher ranks in the future, such as
being a police lieutenant. Criminologists are also able to work at any government
agencies they desire. For instance, they can be employed in Bureau of Internal
Revenue to help in collecting taxes and investigate tax evasions. They can also work in
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to deliver money securely and safely. People often
underestimate these jobs, but they fail to realize the enormous profit and how essential
the work is not only for safety, security and mobility.
Criminologist may also be a lawyer and use their degree as a qualification for law
school. It is said that it is one of the most convenient pre-law courses since we are
given an ample background about criminal law and investigation, which will be of use as
an effective lawyer for mitigating criminal cases.
And last but definitely not the least, they can be a teacher or a professor in universities
and colleges to fulfill the honor of sharing their knowledge about the subject matter.
