COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course examines fundamental principles related to language pedagogy and assessment. It covers
both theoretical and practical issues in order to help students develop a conceptual understanding along
with practical experience in the teaching and assessment of the four basic language skills. The course
explores procedures for designing an effective assessment based on learning goals and objectives. It
will provide opportunities for students to assess, administer and interpret the results of formal and
informal assessment procedures.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course aims to:

 Focus on principle and practices of language assessment


 Design, construct and use various test types to assess language skills
 Use appropriate assessment methods to assess various language skills
 Reflect and discuss issues and concerns in language assessment in Saudi Arabia and another
context

GENERAL POLICIES:
MAKING UP FOR MISSED DEADLINES
 The instructor must be informed of the reasons in case any submission deadlines are missed.
Making up for missed deadlines will not be done without presenting a sound excuse (of a
medical or serious personal circumstance) that is officially acceptable and supported with
authentic reports or documents.
 Excuses and documents must be included in one file presented to the instructor via email or as
a hard copy.
 Excuses are studied by the course instructors (with the course coordinator, sometimes) before
the excuse is accepted and a chance is given for making up for the missed work.
 Orally delivered excuses or ones that are not supported with documents are not likely to be
accepted.

BEYOND-CLASS STUDENT-INSTRUCTOR COMMUNICATION


 Communication with the course instructor will be by appointment arranged via email or
whatsapp.
 Communication messages must be through university channels: 1). University email: You
must activate your UJ email and contact her through it; or 2). Blackboard messages.
 Messages sent to the instructor must be in formal English and following the email format.
Messages written in Arabic or in a casual, chat style are likely to remain unanswered.
