Statistics plays a main role in our daily activities most especially in the field of
research. It helps us in the collection, analysis, and presentation of data. Gathering data
is very important in order for us to come up with a conclusion and solution to any
problem. Statistics is very useful most especially in determining the population growth
rate, unemployment, housing, schooling, medical facilities, and other important data to
be gathered and recorded in a country. Without data, it is difficult for the government to
set target or to make solutions if there are problems occurred. In short, it is difficult to
gain progress. For example, in our country many Filipinos still engage with poverty. One
of the reasons is the unemployment. With the help of Statistics, we can gather data
what are the other reasons of why poverty still hits the Filipinos. Then, we can find
probable solutions with the problem based on the research. Another use of Statistics is
about the weather forecast. Statistics are very important for observation, analysis and
mathematical prediction models. Weather forecast models are built using statistics that
compare prior weather conditions with current weather to forecast future weather
conditions. In the field of medical study, Statistic help doctors keep track of where the
baby should be in his/her mental development. Physicians also use statistics to examine
the effectiveness of treatments. Really Statistics plays an important role in our lives.
With the help of it, we can know what happened in the past and what may occur in the
future.
The field of statistics is composed of two broad categories – Descriptive and
Inferential statistics. Both of them give us different insights about the data. One alone
does not help us much to understand the complete picture of our data but using both of
them together gives us a powerful tool for description and prediction. Descriptive
statistics provides us the tools to define our data in a most understandable and
appropriate way. It uses the data to provide descriptions of the population, either
through numerical calculations or graphs or tables. Meanwhile, Inferential Statistics
is about using data from sample and then making inferences about the larger
population from which the sample is drawn. It makes predictions about a population
based on a sample of data taken from the population. A study using descriptive
statistics is simpler to perform. However, if you need evidence that an effect or
relationship between variables exists in an entire population rather than only your
sample, you need to use inferential statistics. These two categories of Statistics will
help me and the other students to analyze deeper any given data and can get the most
reliable result. The very first reason why to study Statistics is to be able to effectively
conduct research. Without the use of statistics, it would be very difficult to make
decisions based on the data collected from a research project. This would be very
useful especially if you are conducting thesis. Another reason is to further develop
critical and analytic thinking skills. The study of statistics will serve to enhance and
further develop these skills. To do well in statistics, one must develop and use formal
logical thinking abilities that are both high level and creative.
