CHAPTER 9: LEARNING TO BE STUDENT: BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE
Objectives:
a.) Explain how learning occurs.
b.) Enumerate various metacognition and studying techniques.
c.) Identity the metacognitive technique that you find most appropriate for
yourself.
Students can be very demanding at times.
One of the most memorable statements I have ever
heard a student say during the first day of classes
was: “I only learn when I laugh.” I was not sure if
this was just to share something about himself, on
how he learns, or a type of warning or a tall order. It
was somewhat intimidating, and
I needed to take it as a reasonable challenge.
THE BRAIN - Our brain is the most complex organ in our body and it contains100 billion
nerve cells or neurons which are almost as many as the stars in the galaxy (Your
Complex Brain 2017) It is said that each neurons communicates with many others
neurons to form circuits and share information.
What Happens During Learning? Brain and Behavior Changes
When we learn or practice something the neurons in our brain connect with other
neurons until they grow dendrites and create a pathway or pathways. The more we
learn about something the more defined and stronger the pathways.
Learning Education - When delivered well education promises young people
employment, better earnings good health, and a life without poverty. For communities,
education, spurs innovation strengthens institutions and fosters social cohesion.
Metacognition and Study Strategies
Having been given information on how vital learning is not only individually but also as s
community or nation, hopefully we give more effort ensuring that learning takes place
whatever we feel like or not, whether we like the teacher or whether we like our
classmates or not.
METACOGNITION & STUDY STRATEGIES
Given information on how vital learning is not only individually but also as a
community on nation.
Metacognition defined is thinking about you thinking on the process of considering
and regulating.
We need to be honest with ourselves to understand ourselves better.

Perfecting on what we know, what do we do not know what we want to know are
essential in metacognition.
In metacognition , we have to be mindful of it’s two (2) contemporary process
1) the knowledge of cognition and
2) the regulation of cognition (Makamed,2016).
METACOGNITIVE
1. ASK QUESTION – for verification , clarification, other’s opinions.
2. FOSTER SELF-REFLECTION - personal reflection, experiences, assumption,
etc.
3. ENGAGE IN SELF-QUESTIONING – queries related to personal goals and
aspirations.
4. PERFORM AUTONOMOUS LEARNING – make time to study or learn
independently.
5. SEEK HELP FROM POSSIBLE MENTORS – approach peers or educators for
consultation or assistance on concerns that seem daunting.
6. SOLVE PROBLEMS WITH A TEAM – interacting and cooperating with team
members will not only help in learning from other but also enhance socializing
skills.
7. THINK ALOUD – hearing ourselves speak our thoughts help make more sense
at times, having a trusted friend hear initial thoughts may also help in processing
ideas better.
8. SELF- EXPLANATION- explaining to oneself a concept read, heard, or seen
may increase understanding an ability to paraphrase.
9. FORGIVE SELF WHEN MAKING MISTAKES- allow self to make mistakes to
figure out several possibilities surrounding a concept, idea, task

10. NOTE TAKING – taking down notes, the way one understands the discussion ,
video talk, can help process the idea and even add to muscle memory and
retention
11. REFLECTIVE WRITING – keeping a journal or writing one’s realization can help
evaluating our strengths and weaknesses in learning
Managing Your Own Learning: Self-Regulated Learning
SELF-REGULATED LEARNING (SRL) - is a one way for us to use to help ourselves
learn better. SRL “includes the cognitive, metacognitive, behavioral, motivational,
emotional/ affective aspects of learning“(Panadero,2017,para.1)
