HISTORY & OUR COMMITMENT
HISTORY
John Boos & Co., based in Effingham,
IL, is one of the oldest manufacturers
of premium quality butcher blocks in
the U.S.A. John Boos & Co. has been in
business continuously since 1887. It was
in his Effingham, IL blacksmith shop
that founder Conrad Boos first invented
what would become the original Boos
Block®. Having harvested sycamore from
local wooded areas and processing
it in his sawmill, Conrad brought it to
his blacksmith shop for finishing. That
first block of sycamore was placed on JOHN BOOS & CO. WOOD MANUFACTURING FACILITY
three legs to absorb the shock of the EFFINGHAM, IL
CONRAD BOOS
blacksmith’s hammer against the anvil.
It was the local butcher, who having seen and admired Conrad’s block, became impassioned about
owning a block for his meat market. Unknowingly, Conrad’s son, John, who made and sold that first block to the butcher, took John Boos
& Co. into the infancy of serving customers since 1887.
Beginning in the mid 1960’s, John Boos & Co. made its first stainless steel table and quickly expanded its stainless steel fabricated table
business to accommodate changing market requirements. The company’s stainless steel business continues to grow and now includes
an entire range of stainless steel products including custom fabrication. The company combines the art of stainless steel fabrication
and woodworking to create a blend of quality kitchen carts, furniture, worktables and much more. John Boos & Co. continues to be the
only company in the U.S.A. having both stainless steel and wood manufacturing facilities on location, and is well recognized as a leading
manufacturer of quality products.
In 2017, John Boos & Co. marked the completion of the company’s multi year relocation of its corporate and manufacturing facilities from
the central Effingham area to the present South Banker Street location. With the completion of the 116,000 square foot, state of the art,
wood manufacturing facility, John Boos & Co. will be positioned to continue to provide the best products and service in the markets it
serves while allowing for additional new product development, which will continue to stimulate growth.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BOOS BLOCK®
Proper care and maintenance will keep your wood surfaces
beautiful for a lifetime. The application of Boos Block® Mystery
Oil is recommended at least once a month. The more often it is
cleaned, the more often it should be oiled. A dry appearance is
a sure sign it is time to oil your wood surface. Thoroughly coat
the surface and allow the oil to penetrate overnight. Wipe off any
excess oil in the morning.
As wood products will naturally acclimate to their environment,

regular application of Boos Block® Mystery Oil will help protect
your wood surfaces from changes in humidity due to weather. You
should pay careful attention during the changing of the seasons as
humidity levels can change rapidly.
For additional protection, Boos Block® Board Cream should be

applied as a secondary moisture barrier in between oil applications.
Simply apply an even coat and wipe off the excess for maximum
protection.

BOOS BLOCK CREAM FINISH W/BEESWAX

Boos Block Cream Finish w/Beeswax is food safe and designed for the working chef’s kitchen. Whether
used on a countertop or cutting board, the oil finish is intended to be used for a cutting surface. The oil
finish has a natural matte appearance that helps to protect the wood from moisture and humidity ex-
change. With proper care and maintenance, your natural wood surfaces will be beautiful and functional
for years to come.
VARNIQUE FINISH
This beautiful semi-gloss polyurethane finish is virtually maintenance free. It is impervious to most
household chemicals and is easily cleaned with mild soap and water. The fine furniture look makes it
the choice for kitchen island bars and eating counters. It is not meant to be used as a cutting surface,
but if minor cuts in the finish should appear, they will need to be resealed to prevent moisture from
absorbing into the wood. Reseal any damaged areas with EZ-DO Poly Gel. Note: All Cutting Boards have
an oil finish.

The Oil Finish is food safe and designed for the working chef’s kitchen. Whether used on a countertop or
cutting board, the oil finish is intended to be used for a cutting surface. The oil finish has a natural matte
appearance that helps to protect the wood from moisture and humidity exchange. With proper care and
maintenance, your natural wood surfaces will be beautiful and functional for years to come. This finish
requires periodic oiling and waxing.
VARNIQUE FINISH

the choice for kitchen island bars and eating counters. It is not meant to be used as a cutting surface,

Northern Hard Rock Maple is the strongest and most dense of all species of maple. Used primarily

Prized for its dark tones and tough structure, American Black Walnut is a sought after surface for
countertops. The white sapwood intertwined with the chocolate/light brown heartwood gives this

The highly sought after American Cherry has unique grain patterns and a reddish brown color.

TWO UNIQUE FINISHES - PERFECT FOR YOUR APPLICATION

Certainly the ultimate kitchen will have natural butcher block countertops throughout. However, any design and decor can be enhanced by
the addition of this gorgeous, yet useful surface. Many home chefs appreciate a built-in cutting surface next to their cook top. A small section
is also often used over the built-in dishwasher. A butcher block island under a hanging pot rack makes a perfect prep area, or you may want
to add the warmth and beauty of butcher block as a raised breakfast bar with stools.

If you wish to use your butcher block top as a cutting surface, this is the factory finish to choose. Just
like on cutting boards and butcher blocks, the natural wood surface is protected by oil, which is actually
absorbed into the fibers. We advise to periodically re-oil your butcher block tops to preserve their beauty
and durability (PG. 6). If, after heavy usage, you wish to remove cut marks, simply sand the surface and
re-oil. It will look like new.
Refinishing: Can be sanded with fine sandpaper, sanding with the grain and re-oiled with Boos Mystery Oil.
Note: Oiled tops need to be oiled every 3-4 weeks. Northern Hard Rock Maple turns white when dry. Oiled
tops can be refinished with EZ-DO at any time through the life of the top. EZ-DO converts your wood top
into a piece of furniture and should not be cut on. Wood must be clean, dry, well sanded, free of dust and
excess oil prior to application of EZ-DO (PG. 7).
NATURAL OIL FINISH

continuous rails from our choice selections of American hardwoods.
BLENDED EDGE GRAIN

Boos® Blended kitchen countertop surfaces offer harmonious character & provides naturally defined
individuality. Blended tops consist of full length exterior rails and random finger-jointed interior rails.
Crafted of North American hardwoods, the rails in a blended top feature different parts of a tree, (a
blend of heartwood & sapwood) hence the color variations. Natural mineral streaks and unique wood
grain patterns also add to its unique appeal.
