Meaning & Value of Philosophy

Introduction:

Philosophy refers to the fundamental values or some basic assumptions about things,
persons, institutions, and others which form presuppositions that influence one’s beliefs,
decisions, and actions.
Philosophy can also mean the reconstructed belief or a value system which shows a
universal and comprehensive character as a result if reflection and analysis in a more
comprehensive and systematic manner.

In simpler terms, philosophy refers to the beliefs and values that we have reflected and
analyzed, and eventually accepted as a major part of our personality.
Ex.
(1) A person who has reflected and analyzed his experience as a successful professional
could develop the philosophy that education is important in attaining his dreams and
that everybody must be given the opportunity to go to school.
(2) By reflecting and analyzing his experiences, a ship captain who has undergone
different challenges at sea could develop a philosophy that being a ship crew member
is not an easy job, and that those who wish to become like him someday should be
prepared for the different hardships at sea.

Key Ideas:
 Philosophy is a product of self-reflection and analysis; a person cannot develop his
own philosophy without first reflecting and analyzing his/her experiences in life.
 Philosophy refers to the idea or strong belief/value that the person holds deeply. This
belief eventually affects his/her behavior, actions, and decisions in life. It is hard to
consider a belief as a philosophy if it is not applied in the person’s day-to-day life.
 Engaging in philosophy means being aware of the self and the world, and
understanding what is real and not real.
Partial Point of View v.s. Holistic Perspective
 Partial Point of View – the different ideas/information/beliefs you have learned
from other people or sources around you (e.g. school, family, friends, market, etc.)
Example: (1) Your teachers told you that Earth is an example of a planet; (2) you also
heard from your classmates that they have seen an image showing that Earth is
round; (3) lastly you remembered that your father once told you that all planets have
the same shape.
 Holistic Perspective – the idea that you have developed out from reflecting and
analyzing the different partial points of view that you have learned; this is your
personal belief/value that will eventually affect all the other aspects in your life.
Example: By combining all the partial points of view mentioned above, you have
developed the Holistic Perspective that all planets in the solar system is round.
