This document contains instructions for a preliminary exam on biostatistics. It includes 5 problems requiring statistical analysis and interpretation of medical data. Problem 1 involves constructing a frequency distribution table and calculating measures of central tendency for age and dry macular degeneration data. Problem 2 requires calculating the mean, median, and mode for blood glucose level data. Problems 3-5 involve developing statistical inquiries and studies related to relationships between weight and blood glucose, possible bacteria on raw meats, and student academic performance during online classes.

PRELIM EXAM
Biostatistics
School Year 2021-2022, First Semester

General Instruction:
1. Read all the instructions in each type of the exam.
2. The consolidated answers in every group must be type written and must be submitted by the
leader of the group to [email protected]
3. The group number and names of the members of the group must be encoded also upon
submission.
4. Submit on or before 05:00 PM of September 10, 2021

I. Problem Solving. Read and analyze the given statements below. Then, show the necessary solutions to
obtain the final answer.

1. A dry macular degeneration is a common eye disorder among people over 50 years old. It causes
blurred or reduced central vision due to thinning of macula, a part of the retina responsible for clear
vision in a direct line sight. Research says that the cause of this eye disorder maybe be affected by
heredity and environmental factors such as smoking, obesity, and diet. This problem was the focus of the
study of an optometrist. He wants to figure out what age of the adults that the dry macular degeneration
get worst. To do so, he gathers data about the eye problem using the latest existing files in his clinic. He
finds out that in a year, there are 60 patients have this eye problem whose ages are from 50 years old to
76 years old. Consider the given data below.

Age of the Percentage Equivalent of the

Patients Number of Patients
50 years old 10% of the total patients
54 years old 5% of the total patients
58 years old 5% of the total patients
61 years old 10% of the total patients
62 years old 5% of the total patients
65years old 5% of the total patients
67 years old 15% of the total patients
68 years old 10% of the total patients
69 years old 15% of the total patients
72 years old 5% of the total patients
73 years old 10% of the total patients
76 years old 5% of the total patients

Using this information, help the optometrist in presenting and organizing the data by constructing or
computing the following; (Show the necessary solutions)

A. Frequency Distribution Table (FDT) with the complete elements. (15 pts)
B. Measures of Central Tendency considering grouped data. (15 pts)

2. In a hospital, there are 15 patients whose blood glucose levels are being tested. The data are presented
below. (10 pts)
Patient No. Blood Glucose Levels Patient No. Blood Glucose
(mmol/l) Levels (mmol/l)
1 7.2 9 5.2
2 5.2 10 4.7
3 5.7 11 5.5
4 6.3 12 4.7
5 3.8 13 5.1
6 4.5 14 4.8
7 5.6 15 5.8
8 5.4
Using this information, compute for the mean, median, and mode for the ungrouped data .
II. Analysis and Application.

3. A medical practitioner wants to develop the study about the blood glucose levels. His objective is to
determine the relationship between the weight and the blood glucose level of the patients. Suppose that
the weight will be the independent variable and the blood glucose level is the dependent variable. Make a
statistical inquiry out of the given situation and information. (20 pts)
Patient Blood Glucose Levels Patient Weight Blood Glucose Levels
Weight (lbs) (mmol/l) (lbs) (mmol/l)
165 7.2 205 5.2
174 5.2 165 4.7
220 5.7 200 5.5
206 6.3 160 4.7
183 3.8 202 5.1
201 4.5 200 4.8
201 5.6 173 5.8

4. Suppose that you are a medical laboratory scientist. You are task to make a study about the possible
present bacteria brought by flies in the raw meats displayed at Bankerohan Market. Make a plan of your
study using the process of health statistical analysis. (20 pts)

5.The administration of Davao Doctors College instructed the head of the General Education Department
to conduct a descriptive study for students who are enrolled in biostatistics, art appreciation, and gender
and society. The study is about the academic performance of the students considering that the institution
is implementing online classes due to the crisis brought by the corona virus pandemic. The table below
shows an important data for the study. (20 pts)

Use these information to construct an graph that shows the presentation and organization of the data.
Make a summary by describing the graph.

Note: If you do not know how to make a graph using Microsoft excel or Microsoft Word, you can draw
the graph in a clean bond paper. Take a picture and submit it through email.
