1. Wind Turbine Description
The Vestas V52-850 kW is a pitch regulated upwind turbine with adive yCN/ and a
three-blade roter.
The Vestas V52-850 kW with a roter d1ameter or 52 meter operates using the
OptiSpeed® concepl This feature enables the roter to operate wlth variable speed cf
rotation (RPM)
All Vestas V52-850kW turbines are equipped with OptiTip®, the special Vestas pitch
regulating system. With Optffip®, the blade angtes are constanUy regulated so they
are always pitched at the optimal angle for current wind conditions. This opUmises
both power production and noise levels.

Blades are made of glass-fibre reinforced epoxy (Prepreg). Each blade consists of
lwo blade shells, which are bonded to a supporting beam. Special steel thread
inserts, which are glued into the blade root along with bolts connect the blade to the
0 blade bearing. The blade bearing is a 4-point ball bearing bolted to the blade hub.
The maln shaft transmits the power to the generator through the gearbox. Tue
gearbox is a combined planetary and helical gearbox From the gearbox the power is
transmitted via a maintenance free composite coupling to the generator. Tue
generator is a special asynchronous 4-pole generator with wound roter and slip-rings
At higher wind speeds, the OptiSpeed® and the pitch regulating OptiTip® system,
keeps the power at nominal level regardless of the air temperature and air density. At
lower wind speeds the Optrnp® system end OptiSpeecf® oplimises the power output
by selecting the optimal RPM and pitch angle
The wind turbine brakes by full feathering of the blades. An emergency disc-brake
system is mounted an the gearbox shaft at the High-speed end.
All functions or the wind turbine are monitored and controUed by several
microprocessor based control unlts. The Vestas Multi Processor (VMP) unit rs placed
inside the nacelle. Changes in the pitdl of the blades are activated by a hydraulic
0 driven system whidl enables the blades to rotate 95D. The hydraulic system also
supplies the necessary pressure for the brake system.
Two electrical ycm gears rotate the yaw pinions whidl are in mesh with a !arge
toothed yaw ring bolted an the top of the tower The yaw bearing system is a slide
bearing system with built-in friction and an electrical brake on the yaw gear motors.
The glass-fibre reinforced nacelle cover protects all the components inslde the
nacelle against rain . snow, dust, sunlight etc Access to the nacelle from the tower is
through a central opening.
The nacelle also houses a 250 kg service-crane which is placed in the rear end of the
nacelle and operated out through the back door of the nacelle.
Steel tubular towers are supplied for various hub heights and all towers are supplied
painled. Please see section 3.11 "Tubular Towers" for further infonnation

1.1 OptiSpeed® Description
OptiSpeed®, also called ~estas Converter §ystem (VCS), ensures a steady and
stable electric power supply from the turbine
VCS consists of
• an effective asynchronous generator with wound roter and slipfings
• a power converter with lnsulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) switches.
• contactors and protection.
VCS enables variable speed operalion in a range of approx. 60 % of nominal RPM.
VCS along with the pitch regulation Optilip®, ensures energy optimisation, low-nolse
operation and reduction of loads on the gearbox and other vital components.
VCS controls the current in the rotor circuit in the generator. This g1ves precise
control of the reactlve power and gives an accurate and prec:ise comection between
0 the generator and lhe grid.

0 The Vestas V52..ß50 kW OptiSpeed® turbine is as standard designed for operalion in
ambienl lemperatures ranging from -20°c to +4o·c. The turbine will be put in
PAUSE-mode outside these temperatures. Restart-temperatures after stop on
lower/upper ambient temperature limit are -2o=c and +38°C acCX>rdingly.
Special precautions must be taken outside the standard operaling temperatures.
Please see section 1.6 "General Reservations" as well as Lew Temperature (LT)
appendix (Vestas doc. no 946507) and High Temperature (Hl) appendix (Vestas
doc no 951614)
The turbines can be placed in wind farms wilh a distance of at least 5 ümes the rotor
dlameter (260 meter) between the turbines. lf the turbines are placed in one row.
perpendicular to the predominant wind direction, the distance between turbines must
be at least 4 roter diameters (208 meter).
A relative humidity of 100 % is acceptable max. 10 % of the time

Please see sedion 311 ''Tubufar Towers" conc. corrosion protection of lowers.

1.4 Grid Connection

lntermittent or rapid power nuctuations of utility grid frequencies may cause
serious damage to the wind turbine Steady variations within +1/-3 Hz (50 Hz) or
within +2/-3 Hz (60 Hz) are acceptable The voltage operational range must be
within ±10% of nominal.
Grid dropouts should only take place once a week as an average over the lifetime
of the turbine
Grounding (earthing) connection of max. 10 n must be present. Furthermore, it is
recommended that the turbine is connected to a TN-grid.
The earthing system must be adapted to the local soil conditions. The resistance to
0 neutral earth must be according to the requirements of the local authorities.
In case of small independent grids, it will be necessary to check the aclual
conditions.

1.5 Terrain Conditions

lf the terrain is outside the below listed rules or the terrain otherwise seems complex,
particular considerations may be necessary and Veslas must be contaded:
• A maximum slope of 10° within a radius of 100 meters from lhe turbine.
• A maximum slope of 15° within a radius of 100 to 500 meters from the turbine.
• A maximum slope of 20° outside a radius of 500 meters from the turbine.

1.6 General Reservations

Vestas Optispeed® technology is not available in Uniled States of Amenca and
Canada.
In c:onnection with heavy lcing-up, interruptions in operation may be expected.
0
In certain c:ombinations of high wind. high temperature, low air density and/or low
voltage, power de-raling may occur This is to ensure that the thermal conditions of
the main components such as gearbox, generator etc. are kept within limits.
lt is generally recommended that the grid vollage is as close to nominal as possible.
In connection with grid dropout and very low temperatures, a certain time for heating
must be expected, before lhe turbine can restart to operate.
:f the wind turbine is placed at more than 1000 m above sea level, a higher
temperature rise than usual might occur in the generator, in the transformer and in
other elecirical components In this case a period1c reduction of rated power might
occur, even if the ambient temperature is within the specified limits.
Furthermore, also at sites at more than 1000 m above sea level, there will be an
increased risk of icing-up
Due to continuous development and updating of our products, Vestas reserves the
right to change the specifications Wtthout previous notific:ation.

2.2 Power Tables and Curves
Power tables and curves are calculated on basis of NACA63 and FFA-W3 blade
profiles.

Parameters for calculating the power curves/tables are the following:

Frequency 50/60 Hz
Rotor diameter 52 meter
Tip angle Pitch regulated
Turbulence intensity : 10%

'Mnd speed calrulated as 10 minutes average value at hub heighl and perpendicular
to the roter plane.
0 The power curve is measured at the ground controller an the low-valtage side of the
tranSfonner. Lasses in transfonner and high-voltage cables are lherefore not induded
in the measurements.

In order to meet the site-specific demands for low nolse, it is posslble to program
the turbine nolse emission levels before installation. Lowering the noise emission
level, will influence negatively an the kWh-production compared to standard setting
104.2 dB(A).

1. V52-850 kW Wind Turbine
Vestas V52-850 kW with VMP-850 kW- 690 V- 50 Hz controller.

Vestas V52-850 kW wind turbine is a pitch regulated wind turb1ne, in consequence of which the
blades are always pitched in the optimum angle during produdion as weil as stop situations.
The generator 1s a special asynchronous generator with wound rotor, slip rings and Vestas
Converter System, VCS, which enables the wind turbine to operate at a variable speed.
Among the advantages of a pitch regulated wind turbine wilh variable speed the following
should be mentioned

• Optimum production under all wind conditions.

• Output is limited to 850 kW.
• Power output is smoothed resulting in high power quality and low flicker level.
• No motor start.
0 • Turbine can be stopped without using the mechanical brake.
• Minimising fluctualions in the mechanical transmission system.

2. The VMP-Controller
The wind turbine operates fully automatic by means of the VMP-controller (Vestas Multi Proces-
sor controller), which serves the fC?llowing funclions:

• Before connection to the gnd, the speed of rotation is synchronised to the grid
frequency in order to limit the cut-in current
• Cut-in current is lower than nominal current.
• Automatie yawing of the naceUe in acx:ordance with the wind direction.
• Monltoring of lhe operation.
• Stop of the turbine in case of faults.

The VMP-controner consists of a ground controller top controller and a VCS controller. The top
0 controller and VCS controller are located in the nacelle The location of the ground controller
depends on the choice of tubular tower or lattice tower.

General Reservation-

• Vestas OptiSpeed™ Technology is not available in the Uniled States of Amer-

ica and Canada

3. Tubular Tower
The ground controller is located on a 1 meter high platform at the bottom of the tower. The grid
cables are led through 2 pieces of 160 mm tubes in the foundation placed immediate under the
grid connection seclion of the ground controller.

4. Lattice Tower
lt the turbine is installed on lattice tower, the ground controller is located in a shed between the
comer legs of the tattice tower. The shed must be secured to a cxmaete foundation and the
grid cables are lad through 2 pieces of 160 mm tubes into the grid connection secüon

5. Earthing System
The transtormer must have the low voltage grid side connected in star and this star polnt must
be earthed, and connected to lhe earthing system of the turbine.
lt is recommended to make the grid connection as a TN-system, see IEC 364 section 312.2 1
and 413.1.3. In consequence there of, the earthing system of lhe turbine must be connected to
the earthing system of the transtormer. The connection can be made either with a separate
conductor (e.g bare copper conductor) or lhrough the neutral conductor in the grid cable. see
drawing no. 948636. lf the neutral conductor is used, it must be marked with green/yellow tape
0 at both ends and defined as a PE-condudor, according to IEC 364 section 514.3.3.

6. Turbine Earthing System/Lightning Protection

The system should be made at the same time as the foundation work.
The earthing system must be accommodated to local seil conditions. The resistance to earth
should normally be no higher than 10 0 . (In the Netherlands the resistance to earth must bebe-
low 2.5 0, when the earthing system and concrete reinforcement are connected. see drawing
948678).
The earthing system shall be made as a closed ring conductor with earthing rods, see drawing
948678. This gives the following advantages:

1. Personnel safety
The ring conductor limits step and contact voltage for persons, staying near the
tower foundalion in case of a lightning strake

0 2. Operational safety
The earthing rods ensure a steady and low resistance to earth for the whole
earthing system

The earthing system is made as follows·

1. Ring conductor rn 50 mm2 Cu is establrshed at a distance of 1 m from the foun-

dation and approx 1 m below ground level.

2. The ring conductor is supplemented with 2 copper coated earthing rods each of
6 m (014). The earthing rods are rammed down on each side of the
towernattice tower (180° between the earthing rods).

3. The ring conductor is connected to two tower legs or two opposite points on a
tubular tower The ground controller is connected to one of these points, see
drawing no. 948678.

lf the resistance to earth is not sufficiently low, the earthing system can be lmproved.

1. The two earth rods can be extended to 1o m.

2. Two extra earth rods each of a length of 1Om can be added (90° between the 4
earth rods).

Reactive power is produced by the roter converter; therefore traditional capacitors are not
used.

The V52-850 kW wind turbine is able to operate in fixed power factor mode with a power fac-
tor range in the interval from 0.98 capacilive to 0.95 indudive measured on the 690 V gen-
erator side and with 100% of rated active power. lt is possible to choose other power factor
values, however, with reduced active power.

The V52-850 kW wind turbine is also able to operate in fixed reactive power mode. In the
fixed reactive power mode, the wind turbine will generate or absorb readive power up to 500
kVAr, when the generator stator winding is coupled in delta, however. wilh decreased reac-
tive power close to the rated power output (see lhe red line in the attached diagram). When
the stator winding is in star connection, the maximum readive power is 250 kVAr

The turbine will automatically change the generator stator connection from star to delta and
0 vice versa, depending on the actual active power production.
The criteria are as follows:

• From star to delta: Active power must be above 300 kW for more than 30 seconds
• From delta to star: Active power must be below 100 kW for more than 15 seconds

This means that if the turblne is adjusted to generate e.g 400 kVAr, the turbine will automati-
cally decrease the reaclive power to 250 kVAr, when the generator is in star connection.

Please note that the area mar1<ed with indicates that the generator can be in either star
or delta, depending on the actual conditions.

Please note that the generator can be In star connection producing active power above 300
kW, if the wind speed increases rapidly during the 30 seconds time delay. The active power
in star is limited to 450 kW.
This can also happen at low wind speed, so that the generator can be in delta below 100 kW
0 if the wind speed is decreasing rapidly (faster than the 15 seconds time delay).

The minimum reactive power is limited to a power factor of 0.2

All the above reactive power levels are possible through parameter adjustments in each tur-
bine. This can be achieved either by changing the parameter in each turbine (to be carried
out by a Vestas service engineer on site), or through the SCADA system VestasOnline™

Please contact Vestas for more information about VestasOnline ™.

9. Grid Connection
In the bus bar section of the ground controller, there is one circuit breaker (08) for the generator
and one cirruit breaker (F30) for aux. supply. The controt circuits can be disconnected with one
circuit breaker (016).

Circuit breaker 08 is lockable. Wien 08 is disconneded, there will still be power for the light in·
stallation.

Beneath the bus bar section, the grid connectlon sedion is located, please see drawing 925641
The grid c:ables are conducted through the 2x160 mm tubes in the foundalion to lhe grid con·
nection section in the ground controller. There are four tenninals for respectively L1, L2, L3 and
( PE. The grid cabtes must be mounted with c:able lugs. Two M12x50 bolts in each terminal are
used for mounting the cable lugs. This werk must be canied out by an authorised electrician

lt the nacelle is placed on a tubular tower, the controller is placed on a 2.2 m high platfonn.
The grid cables must have a tength of app. 3.5 m from the concrete floor to make lt possibte
to mount in the grid connection section (only for turbines with the transformer placed outside
the turbine tower).

10. Monitoring of the Grid
The generator and the converter system will be disconnected, if the voltage or the frequency
exceeds the following limits.

Nominal phase voltage. UP.nom400 V.=

Grid voltage: UN=690V

The generator will be disconnected if:

Up UN
The voltage is 10% above the nominal voltage for 60 s. 440V 762 V
The vollage is 10% below the nominal voltage for 60 s. 360V 624 V
The voltage is 13.5% above the nominal voltage for 0.2 s. 454 V 786V
Tue frequency is above 51 Hz for 0.2 s.
The frequency is below 47 Hz for 0.2 s

0
lf a fault on the grid disconnects the voltage supply to lhe VMP--controller, the emergency stop
circuit will open immediately and the generator and converter system will be disconnected at
the same time.

11. kWh-meter Arrangement

Vestas recommends lhat the kWh-meter arrangement is located in the transformer housing.
The kVVh-meter(s) should be located behind a window so that they can be read from outside
The kWh-meter(s) shall be connected to measuring transformers. Following measuring trans-
fonners can be used·

• Current transforrner : Class 0.2, 750/5 A

• Voltage transfonners · Class 0.2, 400/230 V (line-neutral).

0 12. Electrical Protection

The turbine is proteded by hardware and software. The hardware protection must be able to
disconnect any electrical short circuits and ground faults The software protection is mainly
for protedion against thermal overtoad, asymmetrical voltages and/or currents. The software
must also protect against current and voltage deviations outside the limitations as weil as fre-
quency deviations etc
The protection diagrarns are created in accordance to IEEE C37.2-1996.
