Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9: Julie Ann F. Romero Mathematics Major Universidad de Manila

This lesson plan outlines learning activities to teach students how to solve problems involving right triangles using trigonometric ratios. Students will practice using trigonometric formulas to solve problems in special right triangles and general right triangles. One activity asks students to use trigonometric ratios to determine the height of an object outside by measuring a person's height and shadow length.

Lesson Plan in

Mathematics 9

Julie Ann F. Romero

Mathematics Major

Universidad De Manila
I. Learning Competency

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. Solve problems on right triangles using trigonometric ratios.

2. Appreciate the value of computational techniques in manipulating trigonometrical ratios to
solved problems with the right triangles.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Solving Right Triangles

b. Mathematical Concept: Right Triangle- a triangle where one of its interior angles is a right
angle (90 degrees).
c. Values: Cooperativeness and active participation
d. Methodologies: Inductive method
e. Materials:

III. Learning Activities

A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
B. Drill

Direction: Place the formula patterns can be used ONLY in a 30º-60º-90º triangle and
ONLY in a 45º-45º-90º triangle .

C. Motivation
Direction: Use your one hand to compute for the exact values of trigonometric ratios of the
given special angles to reveal the picture behind it.

D. Activity

Case Unsolved: Right Triangle Problems

Description: Each group will be given pieces of puzzle to be solved. Each group must need
to solve first the puzzle before they can get the activity sheet that will reveal a word as they
answer all the problems.
Direction: Solve first the puzzle in order to get the activity sheet, then answer the problems.
Each problem have a corresponding letter that will reveal the word as you finish to solve the
problems.

Problems to solved:

1. A 16 foot ladder is leaning against a house. It

touches the bottom of a window that is 12 feet 6
inches above the ground. What is the measure of
the angle that the ladder forms with the ground?
2.

3Kaila is flying a kite whose string is making a   angle with the ground. The
kite string is 65 meters long. How far is the kite above the ground?

4. The Brook's are installing a wide-screen

television with a 60-inch diagonal. Their
entertainment center is 48 inches wide by 36 inches
high, will the television fit in their current
entertainment center?

5. A surveyor is 100 meters from the base of a dam. The angle of elevation to the top of the dam
measures  . The surveyor's eye-level is 1.73 meters above the ground. Find the height of the
dam to the nearest hundredth of a meter.

E. Analysis

F. Abstraction

G. Application
What can I learn from my SHADOW?
Objective: Students will apply trigonometric ratios and other things they know about
right triangles to determine the height of an object outdoors.
Trig Ratios:
We have used right triangles to determine some important relationships that you have
listed above. Today, you and your group members will use these ratios to determine the
height of an object outside. Follow the following steps:
1. Pick one person in the group and measure height: ____________________________
Name of person you are measuring: _______________________________________
2. Measure the length of that person’s shadow: _________________________________
3. Using the appropriate trigonometric ratio, find the measure of the hypotenuse (sketch picture):
4. Sketch picture.
