Introduction
What is Microsoft Power BI is a data
analytics tool.
Microsoft Power To put it simply, it’s a tool to connect and

BI? visualize data to gain deeper data insight.

Terms to know
● Dataset, the data.
● Report, the visualization of more than one datasets.
● Dashboard, the collection of more than one reports.
● Workspace, the area to manage your files in Power BI.
Signing up
To register your account
1. Go to the homepage of Microsoft Power BI or click this link.
2. Click Start free as in figure 1.1.
3. Click Try free as in figure 1.2.
4. Enter your student email address or presuniv address (ex: [email protected]). And click
Sign up as in figure 1.3.
5. Follow the instructions on the website (you don’t need to invite anyone if asked).
6. If you’re successful in registering your account, you will be directed to the home screen as in figure
1.4.

Uploading a dataset
Datasets
Consist of data in a form of excel, csv, and many more.
To upload a dataset
1. Go to your workspace by clicking on it as in figure 2.1.
2. Click New as in figure 2.2.
3. Click Dataset as in figure 2.3.
4. Under Create new content > Files as in figure 2.4, click Get.
5. Click Local File as in figure 2.5.
6. Click Import as in figure 2.6.
7. If you’re successful, there will be 2 new files (a dashboard file and a dataset file) in your workspace
as in figure 2.7.

Creating a report
Reports
Consist of one or more datasets. Contains visualizations of datasets.
To create a report
1. Click on the newly created dataset file as in figure 3.1.
2. Under Create a report, click Create from scratch as in figure 3.2.
3. You will be directed to the an empty report page as in figure 3.3.
4. Now we’re going to add a table to show all the data first. Click the table icon inside the
visualizations group as in figure 3.4, move all of the columns into the values field from the right side
of the screen and resize the table to match the figure.
5. Next, we’re going to add a filled map to show where the participants go to school. Click the filled
map icon inside the visualizations group as in figure 3.5, move the country column into location field
and university column as count into tooltips field and resize the filled map to match the figure.
To create a report (continued)
6. After that, we’re going to add a stacked bar chart to visualize the number of participants from each
country. Click on the stacked bar chart icon from the visualizations group as in figure 3.6, move the
country column into axis field and university column as count into values field and resize the filled
map to match the figure.
7. Finally, click on Save as in figure 3.7.
8. Set the name as you wish and click Save as in figure 3.8.
9. A notification will appear as in figure 3.9 and you can see the newly created report in your
workspace as in figure 3.10.

Populating a dashboard
Dashboards
Consist of one or more reports. Usually in a form of collection of reports.
To populate a dashboard
1. From the report that you’ve created in previously, click on the triple dot from the menu as in figure
4.1.
2. Click Pin to a dashboard as in figure 4.2.
3. Select the dashboard file that is created when you imported the excel file (see figure 2.7) or you can
create a new dashboard. After that, click Pin live as shown in figure 4.3.
4. A notification will appear and you can click Go to dashboard as in figure 4.4.
5. You will be directed to the dashboard as in figure 4.5. Congratulations, you’ve populated a
dashboard from a report.
6. If for any reason a notification doesn’t appear in step 4, you can open your dashboard file directly
from your workspace as in figure 4.6.

What to do?
Follow all the steps in this module with data from the downloadable excel file.
Submission
Screenshot & Upload to eCampus
Screenshot the dashboard and workspace for your practice and put them into a pdf file. After that upload
them to eCampus. Refer to figure 5.1 for dashboard screenshot and figure 5.2 for workspace screenshot.
Make sure both screenshots are taken with the user info on the top right of the screen visible.

For the workspace screenshot, make sure the involved files (dataset, report, and dashboard) are visible in
the screenshot just like figure 5.2.
