324MAE - Individual Project
324MAE - Individual Project
Explanatory Note: You should read these before filling in your proposal. (Please do
not hand these note in with your form)
The individual final year project is an important part of any engineering course. A pass is
required for the BEng honours award.
2. To be a vehicle for integrating the knowledge gained in several subject areas of the
degree course.
3. To allow you to develop their personal qualities such as initiative, imagination, creativity,
communication, organisation, employ IT effectively and solve non-routine problems.
4. It is difficult to generalise about the scope of projects. Invariably a literature survey will
be required to establish recent developments related to the project. The project may then
require work on theory, design, design analysis, experimentation, surveys, data analysis,
etc., as appropriate to achieving the specific objectives of the project.
The project must be mindful of and demonstrated EACH of the following learning outcomes:
1
The project must fall in the scope of YOUR programme of study. Your subject matter must
be related to the world of Engineering although comparisons can be made to other
disciplines. This document can form the basis of allocation of supervisor to your project. The
summary document will be further worked for detail through a Project Proposal document.
The knowledge base required for a particular project will depend on the objectives and may
involve:
Product Design Engineering Management
Mechatronic Systems Solid Mechanics and Dynamics
Engineering Applications Analytical Modelling
Manufacturing Technology & Materials Product Innovation
Mechanical Science Fluid Mechanics
Thermo-fluid Mechanics Finite Element Analysis
Design and Sustainability Reliability & Durability
Instrumentation and Control Stress and Dynamic Analysis
Kinetics &/or Kinematics Thermodynamics
Your action:
Establishing specific objectives in conjunction with the supervisor.
Initial preparation and planning of the work.
Regular work to progress the activities (learning required new knowledge or skills).
Keeping record which document the progress of the work, in particular a logbook.
Regular meetings with the supervisor to report progress and discuss short term objectives.
Preparation of a report and a presentation, to communicate the project activity and the
outcomes.
