Course Description
French 1 focuses on the key areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French. Each lesson
introduces new vocabulary and grammar concepts through listening comprehension, speaking, and writing
activities. Students learn to talk about themselves and others, describe their surroundings and use numbers
for dates and time. Regular verbs are introduced in the present tense. Simple grammatical structures
are practiced in innovative and interesting ways with a variety of learning styles in mind. The course has
been aligned to meet all national standards.

Standards
The goal of the Fulton County Schools World Languages department is to guide students in
their mastery of the national performance standards, adopted by the State of Georgia.
For Modern Languages, these standards consist of “The 5 Cs”:
• Communication – students will engage in conversations, understand and interpret spoken
and written language, and present information on a variety of topics.
• Culture – Students will learn about target culture products, practices and perspectives.
• Connections – Students will connect aspects of their target language learning with
information acquired in other subject areas such as math, science, social studies, English and
the arts.
• Comparisons – Students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language and
culture, making comparisons between those of the target language and their own.
• Communities – Students will find and engage in the target language outside of the
school environment and show evidence of building a life-long skill for their own personal
enjoyment and enrichment.

Honor Code/Plagiarism Policy

In an effort to encourage fair assessments and to authenticate learning, the Chattahoochee faculty
supports a strong policy against cheating. Cheating can be defined in the following instances:
• willingly provide other students with access to their work
• sharing assessment questions after you have taken your test
• plagiarism
• submitted work from other students as your own
• “splitting an assignment or task and turning in the other person’s part as your own original work”
• excessive parent assistance resulting in a level of quality of work you could not achieve by yourself
• use of cell phone or other device during assessments
• deliberately citing sources incorrectly

Students guilty of an honor code violation will receive a grade of “0” on the assignment or test and a day of
Saturday School.

Students who have been found to be distributing material or information to others that violates the Honor
Code may receive up to 5 days OSS.

The assignment may not be made up (students who have a “0” are not eligible for recovery). Additionally, a
behavior referral will be completed by the teacher in Infinite Campus and the appropriate administrator
notified. Students receiving an Honor Code violation will be assigned Saturday School as outlined in the
Fulton County Code of Conduct & Discipline Handbook. Please note, your college application may ask you to
report instances of academic dishonesty.

We encourage you to talk to your teachers if you are not sure how to use or cite information that is not your
own original work.

Reporting System Provision for Improving Grades
Recovery on Assignments/Assessments
All students will have one (1) opportunity each nine weeks to redo/retake one (1) major assignment/assessment.
• Eligibility for a redo/retake is for students who receive a 79 or below on a specific major
assignment/assessment.
• Students are eligible to earn a replacement grade on a redo/retake no higher than 79.
• Student redo/retakes must be completed before the next major assignment/assessment is given or five
school days before the end of a marking period if there is not another major assignment/assessment
given (exceptions can be made for students who have excused absences during this five-day window).

Late Work Policy

Assignments other than daily homework exercises
Grade will be reduced by 10% per day late until 50%, after which a grade of zero will be assigned.
This will also apply to oral assignments due to be presented in class. After that, students may turn incompleted
assignment for maximum 50% credit until the end of the current six-week grading period. After the six-week
grading period, students are encouraged to complete the work and turn it in for no credit for learning and
recovery purposes. All late work for the last 6 weeks should be turned in at the latest 10 days before the end of
the semester
Remember it is your responsibility to find out what you missed during an absence, so find a class “buddy” to
tell you what we covered, and make sure you collect any handouts.
Make-up tests will be given by arrangement with the teacher before or after school, not during class time.

Make-up Work Policy

Students may make up all work missed on an excused and preapproved absence as per the Student
Handbook (page 10). Work assigned during the absence must be returned to the teacher within the same
number of days as the absence which was excused. Unexcused absences may result in grade reduction. The
teacher will establish a reasonable schedule for completing tests, PBAs, etc. that cannot be done independently
by the student. Assignments missed due to preapproved absences are due upon the student’s return unless
the teacher has approved other arrangements in advance
