AATCC Test Method 188 is used to determine the colorfastness to sodium hypochlorite bleach
in home laundering. It is applicable to dyed, printed or other colored fabrics which are designed
to withstand repeated home launderings. Also for testing the dyestuffs as they are applied to
textiles.

1. Introduction
1.1. Background:
Usually the detergents sold in market contain some percentage of bleach too, which is
basically to enhance their colored stain removal property. But this bleach content must be
optimum so that it may not damage the colored textiles. This testing is basically an
assessment of the material to check either it is according to demand or not.
1.2. Objective:
To grade the sample obtained after laundering with detergent containing non chlorine
bleach.
1.3. Theory:
Specimens are laundered under appropriate conditions of temperature detergent solution, non
chlorine bleach and abrasive action of laundering and then are rated for color change using
the grey scale.
3. Procedure:
4
iv. Washing temperature for cotton was set to be 30 0C and 30 min time was set.
v. Colored fabric swatches were loaded in washer and machine was turned on.
vi. After completion of washing cycle specimen were removed.
vii. Finally the rating was done.
4. Results:
The Gray Scale rating of dyed fabric was 4-5.
5. Discussion:
A very little change in color was observed which was rated as 4-5 according to grey scale. So
this shows that the dyed fabric has great resistance against hydrogen per oxide and bleeds
very little in its presence.
6. Conclusion:
The content of Hydrogen peroxide bleach present in detergent solution resulted little color
change of colored fabric.
