Assignment 2

This document contains an assignment for an ECE 4800 Electromechanical Devices course. It consists of 8 questions related to electrical circuit analysis, power calculations, and reactive components. Students are asked to define and provide examples of real power, apparent power, reactive power, and complex power. They are also asked to derive equations for maximum power transfer and instantaneous power. Several circuit problems involve calculating power factors, complex powers, and sizing capacitors. The assignment is due on June 7, 2021.

ECE 4800 Electromechanical Devices

Spring Semester 2021

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Deadline: June 7, 2021.

Question # 2: What is the maximum power transfer theorem for AC sinusoidal circuit? Derive 𝑃!"# = .
! !!

Question # 3: Derive the instantaneous power equation: .

Question # 4: For the circuit shown in Fig. P4, find the load impedance that absorbs the maximum average power.
Calculate that maximum average power.

Question # 5: Calculate the power factor of the entire circuit of Fig. P5 as seen by the source. What is the average
power supplied by the source?

Question # 6: In the circuit in Fig. P6, the 60 ohm resistor absorbs an average power of 240 W. Find V and the
complex power of each branch of the circuit. What is the overall complex power of the circuit? (Assume the
current through the 60-ohm resistor has no phase shift.)

Question # 7: The steady-state voltage drop between the load and the sending end of the line seen in Fig. P7 is
excessive. A capacitor is placed in parallel with the 150 kVA load and is adjusted until the steady-state voltage at the
sending end of the line has the same magnitude as the voltage at the load end, that is, 4800 V (rms). The 150 kVA
load is operating at a power factor of 0.8 lag. Calculate the size of the capacitor in microfarads if the circuit is
operating at 60 Hz. In selecting the capacitor, keep in mind the need to keep the power loss in the line at a
reasonable level.
