AVERAGES: MEAN, MEDIAN, AND MODE (GROUP DATA)
I. LEARNING CONTEXT
This is a lesson on computing for the values of Mean, Median, and Mode given a set of data. You will
also describe data using the mean, median, and mode. Problem solving involving Mean, Median, and
Mode of grouped data is also included in this lesson.
Grouped data – are the data or scores that are arranged in a
frequency distribution
Frequency distribution – is the arrangement of scores according to
category of classes including the frequency
Frequency is the number of observation falling in a category
The only one formula in solving the mean for group data is called
Assumed mean method or direct method
Mean measures stability. It is the most stable among other measures of central tendency because
every score contributes to the value of the mean.
Median is what divides the scores in the distribution into two equal parts. It is also known as the
middle score or the 50th percentile.
Median of grouped data formula: Median = LB + (
εf
−cf < ¿ ¿ ) i
2 fm
20 – 10
= 169.5 + (
15
)10
= 176.16
Steps in solving median for grouped data:
1. Complete the table for cf<
2. Get n/2 of the scores in the distribution so that you can identify MC.
3. Determine la, cfp, fm and c,i.
4. Solve the median using the formula
When to use the median.
1. The exact midpoint of the score distribution is desired.
2. There are extreme scores in the distribution.
The mode or the modal score is a score that occurred most in
the distribution.

Mode = LBm +( )i

8+10
= 169.5 + 4.44
= 173.94
II. LEARNING COMPETENCE WITH CODE
illustrates the measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) of a statistical data.

III. EXERCISES/ACTIVITIES
1. The frequency table below represents the distribution, according to age, of students in a
certain class.
1. Find the mean, median, and mode for this distribution.
