Lesson Plan Science 4 Classifying Rocks

This lesson plan aims to teach 4th grade students about classifying rocks. The students will collect rock samples and use a key to classify them into three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. They will do activities to motivate learning and enable them to observe, identify, and classify the rocks. Assessment includes questions to test their understanding of rock characteristics and the three classifications.

SEMI - DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE AND HEALTH - GRADE 4

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the pupils should be able to:
1. Identify rocks according to its characteristics
2. Classify the rocks collected using the key
3. Participate activity in the class discussion

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Classifying the rocks using the key
Skills: Observing, identifying and classifying
Values: Cooperation
References: Into the Future Science and Health pp. 198-199
Materials: Rocks samples, manila paper, marker, and magnifying glass

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

A. PRE-ACTIVITIES:
1. Opening prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom management
4. Checking attendance
5. Classroom rules and regulation
No. 1: Keep quiet
No. 2: Sit properly
No. 3: Raise your hand if you want to answer.

B. MOTIVATION
Each group will be given cut-out of different rock characteristic and they where going to
form a puzzle. The first to finish will be the winner.

C. ENABLING ACTIVITIES

1. ACTIVITY
“Think and Tell”
Direction:
1. To begin, have each student place their game piece on any of the three rock types on
the board. Student may play a quick round of “rock, paper, scissors” to determine who
goes first.
2. One player pulls a card from the deck and reads the "How do you change?" clue on the
back to the person on his or her right. That person is challenged to guess what their rock
becomes.
3. If the guesser answers correctly, they keep the card, which can serve as a "point." If
s/he guesses incorrectly, then the reader may poll the rest of the group, moving clockwise
until the correct answer is given, awarding the card and the point. If no one guessed
correctly, then the reader keeps the card and gains a point.
4. Regardless of whether any person guesses correctly, the player will move their game
piece to that correct rock type.
5. Once this round is complete, the next student will take a turn as the clue reader. The
game will continue until all of the 24 cards have been used, or until the teacher deems
appropriate.
Teacher Tip: If one group finishes before the others, instruct students to review the sequence
of events listed on the cards in their possession. They can create a timeline or comic strip of
what happened.

2. ANALYSIS
The pupils will classify the foods on where they belong and paste them to the
correct column.

What is rock?
How did you classify rocks in your activity?
How did rocks differ?
How are they similar?
Why rocks do looks different from one another?
Are rocks important? Why?

3. ABSTRACTION
There are three classifications of rock these are:

Igneous Rocks
Form when molten rock (magma or lava) cools and solidifies. Sedimentary
rocks originate when particles settle out of water or air, or by precipitation of minerals
from water.

Sedimentary Rocks
This rocks are layered. Some form when particles of rocks and minerals settle out of
water or air. Others form when minerals precipitate directly out of water. Sedimentary
rocks are identified by their minerals and texture

Metamorphic Rocks
Result when existing rocks are changed by heat, pressure, or reactive fluids, such as
hot, mineral-laden water. Most rocks are made of minerals containing silicon and
oxygen, the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust.
4. GENERALIZATION
Teacher will ask the following questions.

How can rocks be classified?

What trait did you show when you were doing your group work?
Why is cooperation important in any group work?
Why rocks do looks different from one another?
Are rocks important? Why?

5. APPLICATION

Draw rocks in manila paper, after you finish your drawing, make a jingle or poem song
about your output.
Teacher will discuss the rubrics.

IV. ASSESSMENT
Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it in the space provided.

____1. The grade four children had a field trip. They collected different kinds of rocks. They got
rocks different colors. Some rocks are smooth and some are rough. Some were big and some
are small. What does this show about rocks?
a) Rocks haven different characteristics.
b) All rocks have the same color
c) Rocks have same color
d) Rocks have different fossils in them.
____2. How can you classify rocks? Through its_______?
a)Texture b) Hardness
c)Color d)All of the above
____3. Why physical characteristics of rocks can be observed by eyes?
a)Texture b) Hardness
c)Color d)Prosperity
____4. In which of the characteristics describe the texture of rocks?
a)Rough b) Green
c)Crumble d)Smooth

V.ASSIGNMENT

Search or find the Three Kinds of Rocks. Write the Three Kinds of Rocks and give another three
example of each with picture. Write it on your Science notebook.
