WHO ARE ARTISANS?
An artisan is a skilled craft worker who makes or creates material objects partly or entirely by hand .These objects may be functional or strictly
decorative. Artisans practice a craft and may through experience and aptitude reach the expressive levels of an artist.
For example furniture, decorative art, sculpture, clothing, jewellery, food items, house hold items, and tools and mechanisms such as handmade
clock work movement of a watchmaker .
During the period of Indus vally civilization the pottery plays a major role. the harappan and Indus valley pottery is very famous for its ancient
glazed pottery. After that bronzesmiths constituted an important portion of the population of craftsmen . The harappans were adept at spinning
and weaving both wool and cotton .They are also practised boat making and seal making.
Historians have long know that the European population stabilized during the first half of the 17 th century and increased Europe ‘s total
population and after 1650 population growth surging demand for an increasingly variety of artisanal products in the community of urban
artisans. Hundreds of artisans in Europe cities from the late middle ages to about 1700. Artisans from the late middle ages well into the 19 th
century were defined themselves by occupational labels which is the sign of status.
The housing model should be complement the continuous circulation by activating the street face. From the ancient times ,the courtyard has been
the central space of dwelling, increasing interaction and provide an open working environment, even brings in enough natural sunlight. To bring
the shared working environment to the housing model, these workspaces have a connection to the central courtyard.
They should have varandah to the street face, living room, kitchen, workspace and retailing space. The minimum area required 45-70 sqm for a
single artisan house.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES
Pitched roof is a type of roof which is provided with some slope as structure covering. We know that the roofs are generally provided at top to
cover and protect the structrure from different weather conditions. Pitched roofs are generally used where rainfall is heavy.
Pitch is nothing but slope of roof with the horizontal plane and is calculated as the ration of rise to span

In house 1 and 3 have retail shops on two opposite sides where as the model 2 have the shop on only one side. The spatial organization of each
housing model decides the pedestrian movement pattern.
To break the monotonous circulation pattern, nodes have been introduced after several number of housing model repetitions. These nodes are
gathering places of the village, predominately catering live performances by the residing musicians or classical dancers.

It is the provision of water by public utilities ,community endeavours or by individuals, usually via a system of pumps and pipes.
Electricity
Electrical unit that monitors and supplies electricity to the whole complex would be placed near the service entry.
Drainage
Surface drainage should be provided along the houses and courtyards for easy runoff of the water from paved areas.
