Evaluating Function

1. The lesson plan is for a general mathematics class on evaluating functions. 2. The objectives are for students to be able to evaluate functions and solve problems involving functions. 3. The teaching procedures include reviewing functions and relations, demonstrating how to evaluate functions by substituting values into the function, and working through example problems. 4. Students will practice evaluating various functions by substituting values for x and solving word problems involving expense functions.

Lesson Plan in: General Mathematics
I. CONTENT/ TOPIC: Evaluating Functions
• UNDERSTANDING
II. OBJECTIVES:.
a.The learner is able to evaluate functions .
b. The learner is able to solve problems involving functions.
III. REFERENCE: Teaching guide for senior High School ( General Mathematics) pg12-14
IV. Teaching Procedures/ Strategies:
a. Daily Routine
b. Simple Recall/ Review: Functions and relations
c. Motivation:
d. Development of the Lesson:

a. ACTIVITY: Concept Note #2

Evaluation of Function - a process of calculating the value of a function (y )
for given values of x. The y is the dependent variable while x is the
independent variable. The process is done by substituting the numerical
values of x to the given function.

Example1: If f(x) = 4x2 – 2x + 4, find the value of each of the following:

a. f(2) d. x = -1
1
b. f (3) e. f(2m + 1)
c. x = 0
4
Example 2: Given f(x) = (𝑥), find the following value:
a. f(1)
b. f(-1)
c. f(2x)

b. ANALYSIS
Evaluate the following function:
Given f(x) = x-2 , find the following values
a. f(0)
f (x) = x-2
f (0) = 0-2
f(0) = -2
b. f(3)
f (x) = x-2
f (3) = 3-2
f (0) = 1
c. f(x-1)
f ( x-1) = x-2
f ( x-1) = (x-1) -2

f ( x-1) = x-3

c. ABSTRACTION
1. What is evaluation of function? Evaluation a function means replacing the
variable in the function, in this case x, with a value from the functions
domain and computing for the result. To denote that we are evaluating f at
a for some a in the domain of f, we write f(a)
2. What is the process in evaluating a function? A process of calculating the
value of a function (y) for given values of x.

d. ASSESSMENT #2
1. Given f(x) =, √𝑥 − 3 find the following values:
a. f(12)

b. f(x-3)

2. Evaluate the following functions at x=-2

a. f(x) = √𝑥 + 3

2𝑥−1
b. g(x)= 𝑥+1

c. h(x)=x2+2x+1
3. Solve for problem solving involving functions.
a. Mark started selling snacks in the nearby school. In one day he spends ₱200
for rent and ₱25 for each snacks item he prepares. His expenses in a single day can be
expressed as the function C(x)=25x+200, where x is the number of items and C(x) is his
daily expenses in pesos. How much are his expenses if he prepares 100 snacks items?
150 snack items?
