Kumbalangi Village Tourism

Kumbalanghi is very different from others, because of the working style and natural beauty. The
surroundings of the backwaters will rank Kumbalanghi in the first position among other model villages. In
2003 The Kerala State government selected a number of villages as a part of the “Model Village” project.
Kumbalangi was the first selected Model Village. It is an island which is situated 15km away from
Ernakulam Town and 35 km far from Cochin International Airport. Nearly 1,20,000 people are living in this
village. If you are coming by train, you should get down at the Ernakulam JN Railway station, Kumbalangi
is located 16kms away from the Railway Station. If you don’t have an idea about the route, don’t hesitate to
call a Taxi that would help you arrive at the destination quickly. The Kumbalangi integrated tourism village
project has helped the local people. The Project is creating lots of job opportunities for the villagers.

1.Clam Meat Processing

Clam meat processing cannot be left out from the Kumbalangi aquatic tourism. Clams, shellfish, are
found in backwaters. For the inhabitants of the Kumbalangi tourism village, clam meat processing is
their livelihood. Usually, we could see families carrying out clam processing as a happy family affair
with the entire family taking part in the same.
2.Coir Making

In Kumbalangi the coir business is of traditional style. The ripe coconut husks are being soaked in
water, at that point retted and prepared. The village women then beat the retted husk with their
wooden mallets so that they could separate the fibres after drying it in the sun for two to three hours.

crab farm, where fattening of crabs is done in a natural way.
4. Fishing with Chinese Fishing Net

Chinese fishing nets in Cochin were introduced by the Chinese during the fifteenth century. Here at
Kumbalangi, one of the best tourist places in Kochi, the nets are operated at night time. Electric
lighting is a technique used to attract fishes and prawns. Usually, two people operate one Chinese
fishing net.The main occupation of the villagers in Kumbalangi is fishing and there are hundreds of
Chinese nets in the backwater. The villagers create a breeding ground for
prawns, crabs and small fish.
