1. Read the poem First, A Poem Must Be Magical by Jose Garcia Villa and use it to answer the
questions that follow.

1 First, a poem must be magical,


2 Then musical as a seagull.
3 It must be a brightness moving
4 And hold secret a bird’s flowering
5 It must be slender as a bell,
6 And it must hold fire as well.
7 It must have the wisdom of bows
8 And it must kneel like a rose.
9 It must be able to hear
10 The luminance of dove and deer.
11 It must be able to hide
12 What it seeks, like a bride.
13 And over all I would like to hover
14 God, smiling from the poem’s cover.

Comprehension questions:

a. Do lines 1 and 2, 5 and 6 and lines 9 and 10 appeal to our senses? Why yes or why
not? What characteristic/s of literature does the poem have because of these?

b. To what does the poet compare the poem in lines 5, 8 and 12? How are these
comparisons called and what characteristic/s does the poem have due to these
comparisons?

a. Does the poem tell us of ideas that are truthful and good and those that will make
our lives better? What are these ideas and what line/s in the poem suggest/s these?
What characteristic/s does the poem have because of these?

b. Are the ideas in the poem familiar and interesting to you or to anyone? Will you want
to read the poem again and again? Will you use it to also teach your future students
and why? What characteristic/s does the poem have because of these?

c. What are the literary tools used in the poem and how are these tools differently used
by Jose Garcia Villa from how other writers used them? What characteristic does the
poem have because of this?
