Homework Assignment 1: Practice Solved Problems

This document outlines the homework assignment for ChE221A Spring 2020 semester. It includes 7 problems related to thermodynamics: (1) determining which of two equations of state is acceptable for a rubber band, (2) constructing Legendre transforms, (3) proving Maxwell relations, (4) deriving thermodynamic expressions for a fluid, (5) proving additional thermodynamic identities, (6) determining the final temperature of CO2 gas in a rigid insulated tank, and (7) calculating work, heat, and internal energy changes for an ideal gas undergoing three different paths. Students are instructed to use specified chapters and examples from listed thermodynamics textbooks. The assignment is due on January 17th, 2020.

modynamics, 7th ed.

• Chapter 1: 1.3, 1.4

• Chapter 2: 2.3, 2.4, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10
• Chapter 3: 3.1 to 3.6

Homework Assignment (Due 17th Jan, 2020)

1. [10 points] You are given that following are two possible equation of state for a rubber band

2
1/2 1 L L0 3
(a) S = L0 γ(θE/L0 ) − L0 γ 2 L0 + L − 2 , L0 = nl0

2
(θnE/L ) 1 L L0 3
(b) S = L0 γe 0 − L0 γ 2 L0 + L − 2 , L0 = nl0

where γ, l0 and θ are constants, L is the length of the rubber band, and the other symbols have their
usual meaning. Which of the two possibilities is acceptable? Why?

2. [10 points] Construct Legendre transforms of the entropy that are natural functions of (1/T , V , n)
and of (1/T , V , µ/T )

3. [10 points] Use Maxwell’s relation to prove the following:

   2
(a) ∂C
∂V
V
= T ∂ P
∂T 2
T,N
h i2
∂P ∂V

(b) CP − CV = −T ∂V T,N ∂T P,N

4. [30 points] Consider the fluid whose behaviour is described by the equation:

V
p − b = RT (1)
n
∂S ∂S ∂U
, ∂U ∂H

Find expressions for ∂V T
, ∂P T
, ∂V T ∂P T , and ∂P T .
Also find expressions for ∆U , ∆H, ∆A, ∆G, and ∆S for an isothermal change in pressure from P1
to P2 .

5. [30 points] Prove the following using both the derivatives method and the Jacobian method:
2
(a) CP − CV = T κVTβ
CP
(b) ∂H

∂A P = − S+P ( ∂V )
∂T P
∂V ∂S
−S ( ∂T )P +V ( ∂T )P i
(c) ∂G

∂U S = h 2
−P ( ∂V ∂V ∂S
∂T )P ( ∂P )T ( ∂T )P
+ ·

6. [20 points] You are given a rigid insulated tank of volume 0.2 m3 . It is divided into two equal com-
partments. One of the compartments initially contains 1 kmol of CO2 at 500 K while the second is
evacuated. Now, you remove the middle partition and let the system attain equilibrium. Determine
the final temperature of CO2 in the tank. Assume CO2 to be a van der Waal’s gas with CV = 37
J/mol K. Mention the source of van der Waal’s parameters.

7. [20 points] You are given that an ideal gas changes its initial state (V1 , P1 , T1 ) to a final state (V2 , P2 ,
T2 ) by following any of the three quasi-static processes as shown in the following figure: (i) 1A2; (ii)
1B2; and (iii) 1DC2. Calculate the increase in internal energy for 1 → 2. Also obtain the work that
must be done to the system and the heat that must be added for each of the three processes. Assume
specific heat is constant.
