Lesson 1: Illustration of an Antiderivative
Learning Competencies: The learner illustrates the antiderivative a function.
(STEM_BC11D-IVa-1)
The learner computes the antiderivative of polynomial, radical,
exponential, and trigonometric functions
(STEM_BC11D-IVa-b-1)
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
illustrate the antiderivative of a function;
compute the antiderivative of algebraic functions; and
compute the antiderivative of radical functions.
What is it
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
illustrate the antiderivative of a function.
A function F is an antiderivative of the function f on an interval I if F’(x) =f (x) for every value of x in I.
EXAMPLE 1:
Let f(x) = −8 − 10x + 5 and F(x) = −5 + 5x + 3.
Show that F(x) is an antiderivative of f(x).
Solution: F’(x) = −8 − 10x + 5 = f (x).
EXAMPLE 2:
Determine if F (x) = + x + 1, G(x) = + 2x + 1 or H(x) = + x + 3 is/are antiderivatives of
f (x) = 3 + 1.
Solution: F’(x) = 3 + 1 = f (x). Thus, F (x) is an antiderivative of f (x).
G’(x) = 3 + 2 f (x). Therefore, G(x) is not an antiderivative of f (x).
H’(x) = 3 + 1 = f (x). Hence, H(x) is an antiderivative of f (x).
Both F (x) and H(x) are antiderivatives of f (x). In this example, we are able to illustrate
that an antiderivative of a function is not unique.
Theorem: If F is an antiderivative of f on an interval I, then every antiderivative of f on I is given by
F(x) + C, where C is an arbitrary constant.
Terminologies and Notations
*Antidifferentiation is the process of finding the antiderivative
* The symbol ∫ also called the integral sign, denotes the operation of antidifferentiation
*The function f is called the integrand.
*If F is an antiderivative of f, we write ∫ ( ) ( )
* The symbol ∫ and dx go hand-in-hand and dx helps us identify the variable of integration.
* The expression F(x)+C is called the general antiderivative of f. Meanwhile, each antiderivative of f
is called a particular antiderivative of f.
