 Good Storage Practices (GSP)

● That part of quality assurance which ensures that the


quality of a product is maintained through adequate
control throughout the storage.

 Good Distribution Practices (GDP)


● The part of quality assurance which ensures that the
quality of a product is maintained through adequate
control throughout the numerous activities which occur
during the distribution process.

General Requirements
• Built for its intended purpose
• Suitable and in approved location
• Provide protection from
– Excessive heat & temperature
– Sunlight, rain/floods
– Dusts & other contaminants
– Rodents, insects, birds and other pests
• Security from unauthorized persons
• Properly maintained (e.g. cleanliness, physical)

Size & Storage Requirements

● Enough space for all storage activities/movement –


prevent mix up and damage of the materials / products

● Segregated area required for different categories of


products / products with different status

● Dedicated areas – storage must be organized to ensure


that potentially contaminated incoming materials are not
stored next to finished products

• Where required, a continuous monitoring of


temperature & humidity must be maintained.
– Numbers and locations of monitoring points (temperature
mapping)
– Calibrated monitoring equipment
– Time and frequency of monitoring

Ten Rules of Good Warehousemen

1. Promote personal cleanliness among employees.


2. Provide proper toilet and hand-washing facilities.
3. Adopt good housekeeping practices.
4. Keep food handling equipment clean.
5. Reject all incoming contaminated foods.
6. Maintain proper storage temperature.
7. Store foods away from walls.
8. Rotate stock and destroy spoiled foods.
9. Do not use or store poisonous chemicals near foods.
10. Maintain an effective pest control program
