The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and
performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.
Skills must have been demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment that reflects
workplace conditions.

There must be evidence that the candidate has:


 developed strategies for networking and collaboration for at least 1 organisation

 worked collaboratively with external individuals or groups in at least 3 different service delivery
situations

Observation Activity:

Part 1 of this activity will be completed in conjunction with Written Activity 1.1 Task 1. Before you begin this
activity your group will need to select one of the following types of the Community Services organisations to
use as their employer: Child services, Aged Care, Drug and Alcohol support or Family needs or use the scenario
from Task 1

Part 1: Group Meeting

The learning group are the business development team of the Community Service for which all the group
work. They have been appointed with the task of developing and documenting new strategies for networking
and collaboration for the organisation. The group will need to discuss the networking collaboration needs and
opportunities for your business and then will need to develop and document collaboration strategies for your
organisation.

In the meeting students will need to discuss and document the following:

1. Ways to improve individual and organization performance through collaboration

In order to improve individual and organization performance through collaboration;


communicate expectations and desired results and foster an honest and open communication
between parties to help identify issues that needs to be resolved.

2. Identify and prioritize organization and individual needs

During the meeting, the following five (5) organization and individual needs were identified:

a. Staff retention,

b. Staff requirement,

c. Immunization policy,

d. Client dissatisfaction on meal provisions; and

e. Professional development in palliative care.

3. Gaps in networks and collaborative practice - identify required action to fill the gap

The three (3) major gaps and the action required to fill these gaps are as follows:

5. Strategies to:

a. pro-actively initiate relationships with other professionals and organizations

Be in attendance in functions to meet new people, make meaningful connections for


people to network with each other, maintain contact, build rapport and go online.

b. share information and resources with other organizations to overcome duplication in


service delivery

Effective contribute to a network to overcome duplication thru sharing relevant and


current information, expertise and knowledge, where possible. Contribute to ideas and
strategies to improve the network. All contributions must be reasonable to each
organization.

c. maintain currency and accessibility of information

Be updated, read articles, journals and educational videos and/or documentaries. Attend
and participate in networks and communities of practice. Actively engage in applicable
professional development activities.

6. Define and document the type and level of collaboration

Types of collaboration may include imploring specific service, consultation, etc. The type and
level should be well documented in case of enquiries which could be in the form of request for
certain information, referrals and complaints. Make sure to make information available based on
confidentiality guidelines.

Part 2: Implementation

Now that the team has discussed and documented a networking plan, each of the team members is to

implement it by working collaboratively with external individuals or groups in at least 3 different service

delivery situations, ensuring that they continue to develop and maintain the network through their

collaboration.

During your networking you will need to keep a journal outlining your learning. Read the following questions

and use them as a guide to information required in your journal:

Service delivery 1: Recruitment Agency to assist in staff shortfalls

Whilst collaborating with recruitment agency, below are the identified legal and ethical

considerations:

i. Does the agency have the necessary credentials and licenses to operate and/or perform

the required services?

ii. Is the agency capable of upholding agreements and contracts?

iii. Is the agency able to maintain confidentiality of records?

iv. Do they have enough resources and manpower to check applicant’s criminal history and

background, mental and psychological capacity?

b. What types of networks and collaboration were you involved in?

The types of networks and collaboration involved were the following:

i. Organizational – meetings, referrals, etc.

ii. Individual – delivery of required information

iii. Formal – agreements, contracts, invoicing

iv. Informal – maintain contact

To the organization, the agency was able to help resolve the issue on staff shortfalls thru conducting

the hiring process, performing the interviews and assess tests necessary to recommend candidates.

From this recommendation, the organization was able to select qualified applicants. The additional

manpower improved the organization’s delivery of its services to clients.

d. Identify the values, limitations and dynamics of each networking or collaboration experience.

The values required in networking or collaboration experience are mutual respect, trust and service

excellence. These leads to harmonious relationship, better understanding and sustain a longer

relationship. Communication and active participation to the process is essential.

e. Outline the structure, stakeholders, vision, mission and purpose of each network.

Through participation and collaboration, each network has access to information that the other has.

The agency was able to meet other clients connected to the organization through referrals and

business referencing. Consequently, the organization gained insights to practices and methods used by

the agency’s clients.

Service delivery 2: Training agency to provide staff training

Through their industry-specific experience and expertise, the agency was able to provide the proper

staff training which has increased employee motivation and productivity. Staff is able to adhere to

standards and clients are more satisfied of the services performed.

d. Identify the values, limitations and dynamics of each networking or collaboration experience.

Trust, innovation and mutual respect: these values help build and maintain the networking

experience. Planning and deliberation is the primary dynamics of this collaboration to identify the

right training to be provided. Aside from limitation required as stated in the contracts and

agreements, training agency have a specific line of focus and it may be necessary to employ another

agency for other training needs.

Through participation and collaboration, there is improved flexibility for both organizations.

Organizations are able to focus, thru less duplicated effort, which lead to greater efficiency. There is an

improved coordination between agencies and their contacts thru referrals, advices, etc.

Service delivery 3: Food service to improve meal provisioning

Whilst collaborating with the food service agency, below are the identified legal and ethical

considerations:

i. Is the agency able to uphold agreements and contracts?

ii. Is the agency able to provide services in accordance with health and food safety

guidelines?

iii. Is the agency able to keep sensitive records confidential?

iv. Is the agency able to maintain and update valid licensees and/or certificates necessary for

the conduct of services?

b. What types of networks and collaboration were you involved in?

The identified problem with the lack of proper meal provisioning which has caused client

dissatisfaction was fixed with the employment of the food service agency. Clients are now satisfied

with their meal preparation, allocation and timely serving which has greatly improved.

d. Identify the values, limitations and dynamics of each networking or collaboration experience.

Trust, mutual respect and service excellence: these values help build and maintain the networking

experience. The organization was greatly involved in the meal planning which was discussed with the

food service agency due to specific meal requirements. Ideas were openly communicated to arrive at a

better menu for the clients. Agreements and contracts, limits both parties in engaging in activities that

may breach what has been previously agreed upon.

e. Outline the structure, stakeholders, vision, mission and purpose of each network.

f. What opportunities for participation did each network have?

There is also an opportunity for less duplicated effort during this collaboration that helped the
organization minimize incurring costs, preserve time and effort. There is an improved coordination
between agencies and their contacts thru referrals, advices, etc.
