Reflection paper on the History of English Language

The history of English spans several thousand years, from its earliest recoverable origins in
linguistic prehistory to the modern varieties of English spoken today. The study of its evolution
takes into account both internal history (the historical development of its linguistic forms,
including changes in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicon) and external
history (social and geopolitical events bearing on the development of the language). Linguists
divide the history of English into several general periods, as follows:

Proto-Indo-European (PIE)

Proto-Germanic

Old English (OE)

Middle English

Early Modern English (EModE)

Modern English (ModE)

The English language got its present form through lot of changes. If we look into the history of any
language then we can see that every language has gone through a lot of changes. English language is
divided into four periods: Old English, Early Middle English, Late Middle English and Modern English. As we
know that English is a Germanic language and it belongs to the branches of Indo-European languages so it
has Germanic influence in vocabulary.
