Global Index said that in terms of mobile internet speed, the Philippines ranks 103rd among 139
surveyed countries. The country's average mobile internet download speed of 15.06 Megabits
per second. In terms of fixed line internet, the Philippines ranked 101st among 179 countries.
The Philippines' average speed of 19.51 Mbps was much slower than the global average of
57.91 Mbps.

While having a slow internet speed is definitely not new to the country, at the current
state that we have this issue is not doing any better. Having a good internet would be great
especially because it will not only entertain the people who are stuck at home but the internet is
actually where we do most of the stuff that we were used to. Like for example the online classes
that we currently have, we use the internet to learn, to work, and to communicate with the
people around us. The slow Internet speed affects the business, consumers, and government
agencies that uses the internet to do their daily transactions. Having half of the population below
twenty eight years old, they are likely to be a student and tech-savvy consumers that will
struggle due to the poor internet connection. Not only this but it seems that slow internet service
affected the steep drop in the country’s economic competitiveness, this according to a member
of congress, Rep. Luis Campos Jr. “There’s no question our overall economic efficiency has
been weighed down by inadequate yet costly Internet connectivity,” Campos said, citing the
country’s lackluster Internet connectivity, which has been rated the slowest in Asia. According to
Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), a slow Internet connection is a more
pressing problem in the country compared to poverty and corruption.

This poor connectivity negatively affects students, businesses, and agencies that have
become reliant on the internet to perform online classes and transactions. Students are not the
only one that will struggle but also the adults that work from home in this quarantine. Our society
drastically improves because of the internet connection that is considered as one of the best
technology that helps us to research anything and everything, virtual communication with
people, online businesses, etc. But unfortunately, the internet connection of the Philippines is
becoming unstable every second now that causing us to waste a ton of cash just to have poor
internet access. The real benefits of a good internet are far more substantial and could even
affect a country’s GDP.
