Community Quarantine in Metro Manila due to COVID-19 year 2020

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus or also known as COVID-19, a deadly virus that targets your respiratory system,
which makes senior citizen and people with weak immune system more vulnerable. The
treatment to the virus that originated from Wuhan, China is still unknown to researchers and
scientist. Coughing, sneezing, fever, diarrhea , loss of smell and taste, are some of the symptoms
of the virus. And thousands have died in many countries.

Community Quarantine is implemented to avoid the spreading and transmission of the virus. It
limits the movement of the residents in a certain community, and this is implemented in the
Philippines, especially in Luzon, Metro manila where there are 501 confirmed cases as of March
24, 2020. The community quarantine is effective in some places but in some, there are still
people who disobey the rules.

Corona Virus Disease 2019, also known as “COVID 19” is an epidemic the world is facing at
this moment. Doctors, scientists, and researchers said that there’s still no cure or medicines for
this disease. They suggested that we should have a strong immune system, wash hands regularly,
use alcohol, and eat fruits that are rich in Vitamin C. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily
through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes,
so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a
flexed elbow). When people with Covid-19 develop a cough and fever, this is a result of the
infection reaching the respiratory tree – the air passages that conduct air between the lungs and
the outside. “The lining of the respiratory tree becomes injured, causing inflammation. This in
turn irritates the nerves in the lining of the airway. Just a speck of dust can stimulate a cough.
But if this gets worse, it goes past just the lining of the airway and goes to the gas exchange
units, which are at the end of the air passages.” Says Prof John Wilson, president-elect of the
Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a respiratory physician.

According to CNN News, It all started in Wuhan, China, and started to spread in some countries,
like Korea, Japan, Mexico, USA, Italy and here in the Philippines. After the outbreak in Wuhan,
our government took time to shut all borders which resulted to infected Chinese entering Metro
Manila. Since the virus started spreading around the metro then all over Luzon, our government
started taking safety precautions to lessen or prevent other healthy people getting infected. Pres.
Rodrigo Duterte announced a community lockdown in metro manila, then after a few days, more
residents are still being diagnosed with COVID-19, which pushed the president to announce an

enhanced community lockdown all over Luzon. “Upon further study of worldwide trends and
measures and the need for extreme caution during such a time as this, I have come to the
conclusion that stricter measures are necessary,” Pres. Duterte said. Although this lockdown may
affect businesses, companies and other establishments, it is a must to implement and for us to
cooperate with this because our lives is in danger with this epidemic.

“Martial Law”, this is what some Filipinos believed when the Pres. Duterte declared a lockdown
in Luzon. Even teens stared rallying when the government started putting military checkpoints to
monitor people, “solusyong medical, hindi militar” is the phrase they used, It is immature of
them to be outside protesting especially at this time where the virus can be anywhere. It is
dismaying to see people not cooperating with the given curfew time, or the social distancing rule
by the government and yet being so scared about the virus and seek help back to the government
if they caught it. It is a temporary lockdown/quarantine explained by educated Filipinos who
understood what is happening to those who think this is a way of the government to take over us.
People was already panic buying before the quarantine which is understandable since it is hard to
find food after this, but not obeying the rules just makes it harder for everyone. Metro Manila is a
big, crowded city and the risk of transmission is high. As of March 24, 2020, there are already
501 confirmed cases of COVID-19 here, and out of those 510, 33 deaths are recorded and 19
recoveries. The count is still rising that’s why we are advised to just stay inside our home, even
doctors are “begging” for us to stay put because they are having a hard time and even them are
also vulnerable to this epidemic. Duterte: Make no mistake, we are in the fight of our lives, we
are at war against a vicious and invisible enemy. One that cannot be seen by the naked eye. In
this extraordinary war, we are all soldiers."

On April 14, 2020, The quarantine will be lifted up or extended, it depends on the situation.
Metro Manila is the most affected area, so most of the doctors and other sectors are focused on
disinfecting areas, providing supplies and maintaining social distancing and curfew hours.
Although there are some people and government officials are taking advantages of each other
and the situation, most of the residents still help each other. Once this is done, everything will
hopefully be back to normal once again.
