Fluid Mechanics Assignment 3

This fluid mechanics assignment document contains 4 problems related to fluid flow and pressure. Problem 1 asks students to calculate the acceleration, direction, and gauge pressure at point A for a tank of liquid moving up an inclined plane. Problem 2 involves calculating air pressure in container A and determining the length of the system based on given pressures. Problem 3 requires students to determine the horizontal force per unit length needed to keep an S-shape gate closed in water. Problem 4 involves calculating the pressure at point A in a rotating U-tube partially filled with mercury.

Fluid Mechanics Assignment 3

Prof. Sanjeev Sanghi, Dr. Prapanch Nair

APL106 - Assignment 3
Due Date: 11.00 PM, Tuesday, 7 September 2021.
1. A tank of liquid is moving with constant acceleration up a 30◦ inclined pane. Assuming rigid-body
motion, compute
a. The value of the acceleration a,
b. Whether the acceleration is up or down, and
c. The gage pressure at point A if the fluid is mercury.

2. The system in the figure shown is open to 1 atm on the right side.
a) If L =120 cm, What is the air pressure in container A
b) If PA = 135 kPa, what is the length?

4. A U-tube with a radius of 20 cm and containing mercury to a height of 60 cm is rotated about its center at
180 r/min until a rigid-body mode is achieved. The diameter of the tubing is negligi- ble. Atmospheric
pressure is 1 × 105 Pa. Find the pressure at point A in the rotating condition.
