Slide trombone methods

Method books are especially important because they enshrine information about the way the idiom of
the trombone was understood when they were written. Early books devoted to the trombone explain
something about the way the trombone sounded and was used, but eventually one sees evidence of
actual teaching in these books: they say something about how a player develops a technique. It is
impossible to ignore the importance of the Paris Conservatoire in this process. The writings of the
teachers of the Conservatoire presumably reflect the processes they used for teaching, and they
certainly reveal information about the cultural and musical orbits within which they operated. They
were also influential internationally. The most widely distributed didactic brass publication was the
Grande méthode complète pour cornet á pistons et de saxhorn, written for cornet by Jean-Baptiste
Arban and published in 1864. This book was arranged for other instruments and was on the music
stands of many of the earlier jazz players. The imitation of the French books is apparent too, most
notably in the publications Otto Langey, a New York based composer. Highly knowledgeable and
deeply skilled, he produced a range of method books that were published in New York and re-
published in various places.
