Science 123 MICROBIOLOGY

Name: IGNACIO, WINVIL C.

Instructions: This long quiz contains 3 basic concepts. These 3 concepts are the
objectives covered by the Licensure Examination for Teachers in Microbiology,
i.e. these are competencies that you should know before taking the LET. Your
task is to answer the questions as comprehensive as possible. Please organize
your answers. While you can consult any print and online sources, you are
supposed to summarize and process what you’ve read to answer the given
concept. Maximum number of pages is 10 pages. All submissions will be
subjected to Plagiarism Check. Any submission that exceeds 35% plagiarism test
will be rejected. To avoid this, please paraphrase and edit your answers properly.
Encode all References at the end of Concept 3.

Concept 1:
Describe the characteristics of bacteria, protists and viruses

Bacteria are generally small. They do not necessarily have to have membrane-
bound organelles in their cytoplasm and hold large interstellar structures. They
lack mitochondria, true nucleus, chloroplasts and other organelles present in
eukaryotic cells. Bacteria have subcellular compartments called, “bacterial
hyperstructures”.

Protists have nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. They are

eukaryotes but not all protists are single-celled. They can be classified as
parasites and they have mitochondria. Protists like moist environment, thus, they
are classified aquatic microorganisms. There are three classifications of protists
namely; Animal-like protists, plant-like protists and fungi-like protists.

Virus are known as infectious agents. They can mutate and can reproduce at a
short span of time but only on their living hosts. Viruses can infect plants,
animals and other microorganisms. An immense variety of virus can either have
RNA or DNA but cannot have both.
Concept 2:
Classify bacteria, protists and viruses

Bacteria are known to be a single-celled microorganisms. They are found almost

everywhere including our bodies. Bacteria are outnumbering human cells because
microorganisms make up human human 1-3% of the body's weight. Bactera are
classified into 4 groups namely; Coccus, Bacillus, Spirilla and Vibrio. They belong
to eubacteria kingdom.

Protists are known as eukaryotes. Some protists posses flagella or cilia

(locomotory organ). They like moist environment. They belong to the kingdom of
Protista. Some protists may be closely related to fungi, animal and plants but
they are not classified as one.

Viruses are infectious agents that replicates rapidly only inside its host. They are
classified as microscopic parasites and are much smaller than bacteria. Viruses
are members of the kingdom Orthornavirae
Concept 3:
Analyze the beneficial/harmful effects of microorganisms to humans,
other organisms and the environment

Microorganisms are found in every humans' and other organisms' body. In

humans, for instance, microorganisms help humans have a better digestive
system, help fight infections and establish a stronger immune system. They also
help pharmaceutical companies in producing vaccines and improving out
biotchnology. As for the environment and other organisms, microorganisms have
a symbiotic effect. Microorganisms help decompose wastes which help fight
pollution.

Microorganisms also has bad and harmful effects such as; microorganisms causes
spoilage in food, if not treated properly can attack you and cause fatal and
infectious disease disease, etc.
