I. Overview
To enhance literacy skill of the students and ensure the efficiency of modular distance learning
modality once applied in the school system, Castor Alviar National High School implemented Project
CARIIR (Creating A Reading Independent through Integration and Remediation). This is a program,
supplementary to an existing literacy curriculum that is provided to students for the primary purpose
of enhancing and increasing reading and literacy levels. Such programs can be administered and
implemented both online and offline of a blended learning program for reading intervention.
The problems and challenges that we encountered include poor Internet connectivity and students
having difficulty understanding the instructions on the modules. These problems were resolved
through the creativity and resourcefulness of CANHS faculty and with the support of the parents.
Below are screen shots of the feedbacks and reflections of the students via FB Messenger.
As we went digital or modular, we realized that it was impossible for students to receive enough
knowledge through SLM and pdf lessons or google classroom. It’s hard having students so far away
from school, not knowing how to get the right activities or interventions for them. We all know that
we want our students to develop as readers, and this distance learning feels like a major disruption to
that process. Finding some options that will work for our students is our goal throughout our
preparation of our reading intervention. This way our implementation really work for our students, a
way to promote reading throughout the year.
