OPERATIONS ON

FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVES
• By the end of the lesson, I shall be able to:
• perform addition, subtraction,
multiplication and composition of
functions;
• simplify operation of functions; and
• participate actively during discussion.
ENTRY CARD
Perform the indicated operations.
1.(4x + 3) – (3x – 1)
2.(2x2 – 5x +3) – (8x – 6)
3.( 3 + 𝑥) ( 3 − 𝑥 )
SUM, DIFFERENCE, PRODUCT AND
QUOTIENT OF FUNCTIONS

• Let f and g be any two functions.

1. Sum: (f + g) (x) = f(x) + g(x)
2. Difference: (f – g) (x) = f(x) – g(x)
3. Product: (fg)(x) = (fg) (x) = f(x) ∙ g(x)
4. Quotient: f/g(x) = (f(x))/g(x) , where g(x) ≠ 0
Example 1
If f(x) = 3x – 2 and g(x) = x2 + 2x – 3, find

The domain of f/g is the set of all real numbers except -3 and 1.
{x⁄(x ≠ -3 and x ≠1)}.
COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS

The composition of function f with g is

denoted by
(f ∘ g) (x) =f(g(x))
EXAMPLE :
Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x2 + 4, find:
a)(f ∘ g) (x) =f(g(x))
b)(g ∘ f) (x) =g(f(x))
c)(g ∘ f) (x) =g(f(-6))
SOLUTION:
Given f(x) = 4x – 5 and g(x) = x2 + 4, find:
a)(f ∘ g) (x) =f(g(x))
= 4((g(x)) – 5
= 4(x2 + 4) – 5
= 4x2 +16 – 5
= 4x2 +11
Solution:
a) (g ∘ f) (x) =g(f(x))
= (f(x))2 + 4
= (4x - 5 )2 + 4
= 16x2 - 40x + 25 + 4
= 16x2 - 40x + 29
Activity 4
