What are crops?
Crops are plants grown by people to get food and money.

TYPES OF CROPS
-Food crops (nontraditional cash crops)
-Cash crops (traditional cash crops)

Nontraditional cash crops are crops that were formerly grown for food but can now be grown for sale.

Food crops are crops grown for food.

Examples of food crops


-banana *maize *yams
-beans *cassava *potatoes
Traditional Cash crops

Traditional cash crops are crops which were introduced mainly for sale.

Examples of cash crops

tea, tobacco, sugar cane, vanilla coffee ,cotton

Match cash crops to their products

 sugar cane tea leaves

Problems facing crop farmers

What is environment?
Environment means things surrounding man or man and his surroundings.
Mention the components of the environment;
air, wind, plants, plants, people, animals, water bodies etc.

How do people depend on the environment?


-People construct houses and industries on land
-People grow crops on land
-Plants give oxygen to people and animals
-People carryout fishing in lakes

How do people destroy the environment?


*By carrying out bush burning
*By carrying out deforestation
*By carrying out swamp drainage
*By carrying out over grazing
*By dumping industrial wastes into water bodies.

How to protect the environment


*By conserving the forests
*By carrying out afforestation and re-afforestation

*By using other sources of fuel apart from wood fuel

Legends are stories of long ago that may be true or false.

Legends are stories of long ago whose truthfulness is not known.

Legends are stories that explain the origin of a particular tribe.

Examples of legends are

There are various example of legends these are;-

 The legend of Kintu and Nambi Baganda


 The legend of Mundu and Seera Bagisu
 The legend of Spear and the Bead Luo
 The legend of King isaza and Nyamiyonga Western Uganda

Who were the two brothers?


Gipiir and labong
The father of Gipiir and labongo was Olum.
The major activity done by Gipiir was farming
Gipiir and Labong formed the Nilotic ethnic group
An elephant ran away with Labongo’s spear.

What lessons do we learn from the story of the spear and the bead?

a) To avoid revenge
b) We should forgive those who hurt us
c) Refusing to forgive can cause suffering and death

Kintu and Nambi
The father of Nambi was Gulu.

The two brothers of Nambi were Kaikuzi and Walumbe.

The cruel brother of Nambi was Walumbe.

Kintu lived with his cow and he is believed to be the first Muganda.

Kintu was Nambi’s husband.

Lessons we learn from the legend of Kintu and Nambi are;-


 Forgetfulness is bad
 Poverty can stop you from succeeding
 Determination leads to success.
 When you decide never turn back or give up.
 Cruelty brings hatred.

A clan is an organised group of people under one fore father or ancestor.

The following are the examples of clan symbols; -

A totem is a special object, animal or plant that is protected and respected by people of a particular
clan.

A clan leader heads the clan.

A small group of people in a clan is called a lineage.

The duties of a clan leader are; -


 Registering clan members
 Keeping clan records
 Maintaining discipline among clan members.
 Chairing clan meetings.
The activities organised by a clan leader are; -
 wrestling
 boxing,
 football etc.

A family is a group of people living together related by blood, marriage or adoption.

The types of a families are;-


 Nuclear family
 Extended family

Nuclear family; - This is where we find father mother and their biological children.
The advantages of a nuclear family are; -
 It is easy to provide with basic needs
 It is easy to train discipline among family members
The disadvantages of family are; -
1. It has limited security for the family members.
2. Children may not know other relatives.
3. There is boredom in the family.
4. There is shortage of labour force.

What is an extended family?
An extended family is a family where we find father, mother, biological children and other relatives.

The advantages of an extended family are; -


-The family has enough labour force in case of work.
-The children get to know their relatives quite easily.
-The family has enough social security.
-Children learn to cooperate and associate with others.

The disadvantages of an extended family are; -


-It is expensive to provide basic needs
-It is not easy to provide enough accommodation

-there is easy spread of diseases

The duties of a mother are;


 To cook food
 To take care of family members
 Giving birth to babies

The duties of a father are;-


 To pay school fees
 To discipline and instill morals
 To provide basic needs

The duties of children are; -


 Assisting elders
 Fetching water
 Washing clothes and utensils

Children show respect in the following ways; -

 Through greeting parents and elders.


 Through asking what they haven’t understood

Groups of the family who are weak or vulnerable are; -

 Babies  Young children


 Sick people  The elderly people
 Pregnant mothers
Ways of caring for the young, babies, sick and elderly people are; -

 By helping them to do their work


 By providing them with clothes and food
 By offering them medical care
 Closely monitor them e.g. babies to avoid accidents
 Guide and counsel them

What are social activities?

Social activities are activities that bring families or communities together.

The examples of social activities are; -

 Marriage functions e.g. Introductions and wedding ceremonies


 Naming children
 Burial ceremony
 Clan meetings
 Circumcision ceremonies e.g. Imbalu
 Sports events
 Musical festivals

The importance of social activities are;

 To keep different families together


 To promote culture like language and dressing
 To promote the spirit of working together
 To promote good morals among young ones
 To strengthen family norms
