End Semester Examination (July 2, 2021)
Subject: Engineering Physics Time: 2.0 hrs.
Code: PH-101 Total Marks = 50

Important note: Write answer to questions in your own words. If any indication of copying is
found then the marks will be deducted or even copied question may be cancelled.

1. An electron is confined in a box between x1=0 and x2 =50Å in a potential free region.
Show that it will have discrete energy values in this region. Determine the energy eigen
values of the first three state and the corresponding wavelength associated with electron
in these energy states. (6)

2. Explain the following terms (i) Fermi energy of metal (ii) Fermi energy of intrinsic
semiconductor (iii) Direct and indirect band gap in semiconductor (iv) Fermi Dirac
distribution function in semiconductors. (5)

3. Describe main components of any laser system. Discuss the role of each in working of
laser. (5)

4. How a laser diode differs from the conventional p-n junction diode used in electronic
circuits. (4)

5. Draw the attenuation curve of an optical fiber considering different loss mechanisms.
How it limits selection of wavelength for optical signal transmission in optical fibers.
What are the wavelengths that are used in optical communication. (6)

6. Draw the field for which both the divergence and curl are zero. Name any such field you
know in practice. Also draw the field for which the divergence is positive. Write the
integral form of the Gauss divergence theorem. (6)

7. What was the discrepancy in Ampere’s law. How Maxwell modified it. (6)

8. What is a superconductor. What are various factors which affects the superconducting
behaviour of a superconductor. Explain how these mutually depends on each other. (6)

9. What are ultrasonic waves. Are these electromagnetic in nature. Explain one method of
their production. Write their two main applications. (6)

Constants: Free electron mass mo=9.1×10-31Kg. Electron charge=1.6×10-19Coul. Planck’s

constant h=6.62×10-34J-s, Boltzmann constant k=1.38×10-23Joul/K. Assume appropriate value of
any other constant you need.
