CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Problem and its Background

Education is the most important thing that every student could have,

amidst the current situation of the society due to the existence of the pandemic CoViD-

19 that affects not only the Philippines but all the countries over the world, learning

delivery system is an issue that should be addressed as we move towards fighting the

pandemic. Through e-Learning that has been slowly being a part of the medium of

instruction in the Philippine education. Internet and mobile telephone connectivity and

capacity may vary within the same area or country and especially across countries, and

this needs to be carefully considered when deciding on the design of learning

management system (LMS) online delivery of the course. As the current educational

situation of the Philippines, it is somehow dictated by the existing pandemic crisis that

there will be a new normal for the classroom teaching delivery with the virus threatening

the health of the citizen of the country[CITATION Cor20 \l 13321 ].

In United States, the COVID-19 pandemic is overwhelming the functioning and

outcomes of education systems, some of which were already stressed in many

respects. This is true across the world and affects all children, though to differing

degrees depending on multiple factors, including the country/region where they live, as

well as their ages, family backgrounds, and degree of access to some “substitute”

educational opportunities during the pandemic [CITATION Gar20 \l 13321 ]. The learning

management system (LMS) supplanted the conventional plan of instructing to learner-

2

centered plan and supplanted conventional strategies of getting data, submitting task, or

doing a test.

The execution way of LMs into higher education has advanced from its early

supplementation of face-to-face instruction to its current expansion of classroom space

and its capacity to convey cross breed and online courses [ CITATION Ioa08 \l 13321 ].

In the Philippines, Philippine Education System has been traditional but gradually

changing to cater the demands of the new generation. As a matter of fact, before this

new normal came to light, teachers and learner are already using the internet,

computer, and other technologies in education. But the difference lies between having a

face-to-face class and now in new normal classes are done virtually. Department of

Education introduced 3 modalities of how learnings shall be delivered in new normal.

These are Distance Learning, Blended Learning, and Home-schooling respectively

[ CITATION Cen20 \l 13321 ][ CITATION Anc20 \l 13321 ]

Also, the Philippine government ordered closures of all educational institutions;

the disruptions were sudden since classes were still running. At the height of the

pandemic, educational institutions came out with remote learning as an alternative

solution. Some schools have made a smooth transition since they introduced a learning

management system (LMS) before the enhanced group quarantine, whereas others are

now scrambling to incorporate the numerous pedagogical and instructional delivery

systems accessible. Some people have chosen to accept the situation and put the

health of their educational group first. The immediate action and strategy aim to mitigate

the closure while continuously delivering quality education.

3

In Assumption College of Nabunturan, are now having asynchronous and

synchronous learning. Due to the existence of the CoVid-19 virus the learning

management system (LMS) applied the software application which could help the

students to continue studying and can be able to communicate to their teachers or

professors through via email, SMS, Microsoft Teams, group messaging apps, or

dedicated virtual learning platforms, teachers must ensure that all students are able to

connect to any of the available platforms and resources. Some students are having

difficulties in attending online class because of some factors, having slow internet

connection, experiencing blackouts or the gadget they use in online class is not

working. This study is to identify the struggles and to look for the factors on how the new

normal education may affect the performances of the senior high students in

Assumption College of Nabunturan.

In this study we did not have any specific discussion about the factors of the new

normal education of the senior high student in Assumption College of Nabunturan.

However, this study can help to determine the relevance of Learning Management

System (LMS) in the new normal education.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to the determine the lived learning

experience of the Senior High Students of Assumption College of Nabunturan (ACN) in

the implemented New Educational Setting proposed by the Department of Education

due to the School Closure Policy in Philippines during Corona Virus Disease (COVID-

19). It also aimed to elaborate the different struggles and competences in the learnings

of every student.
4

Online Distance Learning and Modular Learning is the methods used by ACN to

continue educating the students. However, the new setting was recently implemented,

and the students are not used to it. Unlike in the face-to-face set-up, students are

accustomed in the environment in how they will react. In short term, face to face setting

was became their daily routine in their daily lives.

This study will add knowledge to everyone specially the teachers about the

students in investigating the social issues of the students such as the situation,

struggles and competences of the senior high students. Though this research, we would

be able to acquire salient information that would be useful to understand the status of

each of every student respondent. It also aims to overhear the voices of the students

who are taking some hard time in new adjustments in educational setting and identify

the common problems that they have encountered during this event. It also seeks future

direction for the teachers on how to facilitate the students in this new setting even

though the distance learning.

This study also documenting the different experiences of the senior high student

in-depth interviews both negative and positive experiences will be recorded through the

survey questioners that will be given to each of the students. In addition, the intent of

this study is to seek, listen and understand the unheard stories to each one of the

respondents as they willingly share their experiences during the surveys and interviews.

Review Related Literature

In this section, the related literature includes article reviews and research

findings that are relevant to this study and its variables. The topic of this analysis is

about the New Normal Education of the Senior High Students in Assumption College of

Nabunturan. Online class, Modular or Blended class were the choices of the students of

how to encounter their education. This new education system requires more of time and

effort compared to the face-to-face classes and its factors are Internet Connection

Issue, Audio Clarity, Devices and Software, Adaptability Struggle and how it affects the

learners Mental Health which are presented in the following paragraphs.

Learning Management System (LMS). According to Mathew, (2020) Learning

management system (LMS) is a software platform for delivering learning material online

which is an integral part of the eLearning design and development process. It is one of

the fastest ways of development in both the corporate sector and educational

institutions that are hard to ignore. Also, it gives you the tools to manage training and

development, increase learner engagement, and build a sense of understanding that

helps to create new ideas, new technologies that work best with this competitive world.

Stated by[ CITATION Bru19 \l 13321 ]. A Learning management system (LMS) is a

program application or web-based innovation utilized to arrange, actualize, and evaluate

a particular learning handle. It is utilized for eLearning practices and, in its most

common shape, comprises of two components: a server that performs the base

usefulness and a client interface that is worked by teaches, understudies and

administrators. Typically, a learning management system (LMS) gives an educator with

a way to make and provide substance, screen understudy support and survey

understudy execution. A learning administration framework may moreover give

understudies with the capacity to utilize intuitively highlights such as strung discussions,

video conferencing and talk gatherings.

6

Moreover, according to[ CITATION Ism17 \l 13321 ], Learning Management System

(LMS) is a piece of software that allows businesses and educational institutions to

develop and manage classes, courses, quizzes, and other training materials. A learning

management system also makes it easier for a company to administer training materials

and lessons to staff, students, and partners. Learners can access their eLearning

environment using an LMS from any place, at any time.

Online learning. According to[ CITATION Abe19 \l 13321 ] that Online learning also

known as E-learning or electronic learning, it is the process of acquiring information

using electronic technology and media. Online learning is described as "learning that is

allowed electronically" in simple terms. Online learning is typically performed over the

Internet, with students having access to their learning materials at any time and from

any place.

[CITATION Beb \l 13321 ] stated, Online learning is characterized as the creation and

expansion of the individual computer, the globalization of thoughts and other human

acts, and the utilize of innovation in trading thoughts and giving get to more individuals.

Sound, video, computer, and organizing innovations are frequently combined to make a

multifaceted directions conveyance framework. The basic strategy to join the separate

learning teachers with the remove learner is the network. Online Learning includes a run

of innovations such as the around the world web, mail, chat, unused bunches and

writings, sound and video conferencing conveyed over computer systems to confer

instruction. It makes a difference the learner to memorize at their claim pace, concurring

to their claim comfort. Online Instruction requires an extraordinary bargain of assets and

cautious arranging[ CITATION Aro19 \l 13321 ].

7

Moreover,[CITATION Sen15 \l 13321 ], online learning has advanced into a worldwide

alter specialist in higher education, it has gotten to be more assorted in its frame and

applications. This expanded difference has complicated our capacity to share inquire

about discoveries and best hones, since we need a shared set of definitions to

recognize among the numerous varieties on e-learning that have arisen. Technology-

enhanced learning has advanced both from upgrades to prior eras of face-to-face

education and improvements to prior eras of separate instruction. Locked in

deliberateness plan of learning encounters has moreover advanced to advance the

foremost successful plan to serve the learners, their life encounters and the openings

and restrictions of the specific environment.

Blended Learning. According to the [ CITATION Tea18 \l 13321 ], blended learning

combines classroom and online instruction. As a result of changes in both school

educational modules and advanced innovation, as learning demonstrate it proceeds to

pick up force. Where instruction specialists proceed to wrangle about the viability of

crossover learning, its existence has challenged them to re-evaluate not fair

technology’s put within the classroom, but too how to reach and instruct understudies

more successfully. In a perfect world, each will complement the other by utilizing its

specific quality. For the most part, blended learning can moreover, be viewed as a kind

of antique typical of the crevice between ‘traditional learning associated t advanced

learning. This, of course, implies that digital-only is long-term and the ultimate

incarnation of learning. Blended learning could be a blend of ancient and modern as

much because it may be a blend of physical and computerized learning.

8

According to [ CITATION Lyn18 \l 13321 ], Blended learning provides students with

more opportunities to interact with their professors and teachers. They can

communicate via email, program progress reports, or message boards. This learning

style encourages a variety of effective strategies for teachers and students to become

more engaged with one another.

Moreover, according to [ CITATION Max13 \l 13321 ],Blended learning, which has its

roots in online learning, is a fundamental shift in instruction that has the potential to

optimize for the individual student in ways that traditional instruction never could.

Although schools have used computers and technology for a long time, they have not

used it to provide students with a true blend of instruction until recently.

Modular Learning. According to [ CITATION Che18 \l 13321 ] , Modular learning is an

arising pattern instructive reasoning that shifts conventional strategy for guidance to a

result-based learning worldview. Modularization depends on the rule of separating the

educational plan into little discrete modules or units that are free, nonsequential, and

regularly short in span. Also, the actual substance of modularization is that understudies

are at focus of the instructing learning measure. It requires a homeroom climate wherein

understudies are effectively occupied with information development measure and a

move in the part of teacher from information transmitter to a facilitator of understudies'

learning. Not just that, modularization requires ceaseless development and evaluation

of understudies' advancement all through the module/course. The act of powerful

consistent evaluation permits educators making changes in accordance with instructing

and learning considering appraisal proof. This additionally assists understudies with

accepting input about their learning with counsel on how they can deal with improve.
9

Moreover, according to[ CITATION Nar17 \l 13321 ], modular learning is an innovation

among developed and developing countries whose impact is brought by projects on the

preparation and use of modules of different offices like the Asia Center of Innovations in

Education. It is an instructional material which possesses the qualities that will make the

individual an independent learner, self-pacing and progressing at his own rate, finally

giving him the feeling of self-satisfaction, the very essence of modular instruction.

Modular learning encourages independent study. One of the benefits of using modules

for instruction is the acquisition of better self-study or learning skills among students.

Students engage themselves in learning the concepts presented in the module. They

develop a sense of responsibility in accomplishing the tasks provided in the module.

Internet Connection Issues. According to[ CITATION Lyn18 \l 13321 ] , Students

without internet cannot connect with teachers or classmates, do independent research,

or get online homework help. For families, not having internet access can mean missing

out on information or losing out on a direct line of communication with schools and

teachers. There is a sudden irritability during the online class sessions due to poor

internet connections amongst attendees; often at times systems shut down and need to

be restarted; this leads to disinterest in re-joining the lecture instantaneously.

According to [ CITATION Cai20 \l 13321 ] ,[ CITATION Ell00 \l 13321 ] stated that Lagging

Wi-Fi means missing out on chunks of conversation when the internet freezes, and the

atmosphere and learning environment is not the same as sitting in a classroom with

lecturers and classmates.

As stated by [ CITATION Ell00 \l 13321 ][ CITATION Elo20 \l 13321 ],“I’m finding it very

difficult to concentrate in them [online lectures]. Being in a non-designated space like a

10

classroom means I get easily distracted, go on my phone more, might open new tabs in

the computer. They’re a good effort and I’ll take it, it’s the best that we can do, but there

is definitely a different energy”. In the age of online learning, an area of concern facing

students living in rural areas and remote communities is the lack of high-speed internet

to attend lectures and conduct any form of evaluations. This presents a systemic issue,

as students who work and live-in rural communities are faced with poor internet

connections, as well as lack of infrastructure.

[ CITATION Elo20 \l 13321 ] reported that Poor internet connection and lack of digital

device accessibility are still impeding distance learning as the pandemic continues.

According to Education and Culture Ministry data, 51 percent of early education to

middle school students living in the outermost, border and disadvantages areas do not

have reliable internet connection. In addition, 27.8 percent of them said that they had

access to a laptop or computer, but the devices were also unreliable. Varied

accessibility to broadband internet has compromised the quality of education for

university students, as most classes are online and rely on high-speed internet for

synchronous remote learning. Broadband refers to a high-speed internet that is always

on.

Audio Clarity. According to [ CITATION Ama20 \l 13321 ] , Poor internet connection

can cause audio drawbacks, the type of microphone used may also contribute to the

problem. Problems of unwanted echo and background noises both from the professor or

from the student reciting most often are distracting. Being on-call preferably with

headphones that have built-in mic can only do so much. Most of my classmates had

opted to buy a separate microphone just to have proper audio clarity when wanting to
11

recite in class. Good for those who can afford. It may or may not be that expensive; but

still is an added expense.

According to If [CITATION Hil20 \l 13321 ], the audio is poor, the students are

constrained to fill within the spaces where required. In expansion to confused lessons,

this too occupies the students, which makes it harder to pay consideration and can

produce stress. On the off chance that students got to replay a lesson portion over and

over, they are taken out of the learning encounter and may not perform as well. Poor

audio quality is the major factor of the students, as concurring to a few thinks about, up

to 33% of students have a poor audio quality in the e-learning.

According to the Future of Ed-Tech Insiders (2017), one of the most common

reasons for a communication breakdown is poor speaking etiquette of the individuals

involved in the communication process. Clear speech is a speaking style that focuses

on clearer pronunciation of sounds, speaking at a normal pace, and using pauses to

allow the listener time to process what is being said. It is common for people to speak

too loudly when they think someone cannot hear them. However, louder is not better.

Consonants convey most of the information in a word. Since consonants are spoken

more softly than vowels, they tend to get drowned out in noisy environments.

Devices & Software. According to [ CITATION Kum15 \l 13321 ]many students are

not provided with the high bandwidth or the strong internet connection that online

courses require, and thus fail to catch up with their virtual classmates: Their weak

monitors make it hard to follow the Course Management System and their learning

experience becomes problematic. Moreover, most of them live off campus and find it

difficult to keep in tune with the technical requirements of the chosen course.
12

In the opinion of [ CITATION Ama20 \l 13321 ], she was content with the devices that

she had. They may not be the latest; but they were all efficiently working for her needs.

Everything changed when online classes began. Suddenly, her devices were not just up

to it. They have turned Jurassic and just could not keep up. As most classes are

conducted through video conferences, most platforms need an updated system to work

efficiently. She needed an upgrade not only of the system, but of the device. Sadly, it is

a luxury that turned into a necessity that everyone could not just easily afford. Not

currently, where most jobs are hanging by a thread. The application used during online

classes also has its bad days. From a student’s perspective, it may look easy as

opening our device and logging in, but the reality is that we also suffer from a system

glitch that we do not see coming the crashing of the application, sudden removal from

an on-going class, the incompatibility of the application on certain devices, and so on.

[ CITATION Cho17 \l 13321 ] shares her opinion that students can only grin and bear

through the outdated software because there is no other alternative on such short

notice. They can either be fortunate enough to find another way to view the material or

end up just dropping the class entirely. Online courses are the only method for long

distance students to fulfil certain GW credit requirements on their own time, so this

situation cannot remain unsolved. Not all online courses are this way and some do a

great job interacting with students from afar, but that should be the standard for all

classes. This issue can be resolved with the easy solution of using better, up-to-date

software to record lessons so every student can have access to a quality education.

Based on the report of [ CITATION Mud17 \l 13321 ] , in 2015, only 61 percent of

fourth graders had reading teachers who said they had received training on how to
13

integrate technology into their classroom instruction, according to the report. That

number was 64 percent in 2009. Additionally, only 13 percent of U.S. eighth-grade math

students had teachers who reported learning a “large extent” from professional

development for using technology for math instruction. As much as 40 percent of

students had teachers learning a “small extent,” 32 percent learned a “moderate extent”

and 15 percent had teachers who reported learning nothing at all.

Adaptability Struggle. According to [ CITATION Kum15 \l 13321 ][CITATION SU18 \l

13321 ], Switching from traditional classroom and face to face instructor training to

computer-based training in a virtual classroom makes the learning experience entirely

different for students. Their resistance to change does not allow them to adapt to the

online learning environment, whereas it takes time for them to get accustomed to

Course Management Systems (CMS) and the methods of computer-based education.

While passive listening and notes taking are expected in a traditional classroom, online

discussions or creating a web page demand springing into action. Students with a

“traditional” mind-set find it difficult to adapt; however, they need to accept the new

learning circumstances with an open mind and heart. Understanding the benefits of

eLearning and even discussing them with their peers may change this mind-set and

better prepare students for online classes.

On the authority of [CITATION SU18 \l 13321 ], as our educational system struggles to

adapt to the rapidly changing world, AltSchool is bringing classrooms into the twenty-

first century by using technology to offer students a personalized education. No one

needs convincing about the value of an education. That said, one can argue that our

educational system, as well intentioned as it might be, is outdated and falling behind the
14

rapidly changing times. The twenty-first century demands a different type of student –

one that can think critically, solve multi-disciplinary problems, effectively communicate,

operate both independently and in a team, and learn and employ new technological

tools. Likewise, with our current one size fits all schooling, some students are being left

behind while others are being held back by an inability to move faster than their class.

According to [ CITATION Jag12 \l 13321 ], Regardless of students’ own

characteristics, their adaptability to online learning may also differ by academic subject,

as online courses might be more engaging or effective in some subject areas than in

others. For instance, it may be more difficult to create effective online materials,

activities, or assignments in fields that require a high degree of hands-on demonstration

and practice, intensive instructor-student interaction, or immediate personalized

feedback. In support of the notion that the effectiveness of online learning may differ

across subject areas, a recent examined course subjects that students preferred to take

online rather than face-to-face.

Mental Health. According to [CITATION EisO7 \l 13321 ], Mental health problems can

affect many areas of students’ lives, reducing their quality of life, academic

achievement, physical health, and satisfaction with their experience, and negatively

impacting relationships with friends and family members. These issues can also have

long-term consequences for students, affecting their future employment, earning

potential, and overall health.

As stated by [ CITATION Wyr18 \l 13321 ], among students, anxiety, depression and

eating disorders are extremely common. According to mental health research

conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in four students has a
15

diagnosable mental illness. Stress from exams, pressure from peers and family -

pressure to do well at the university and to go out socialize and have fun. Going away

on an exchange may for sure add to that it is an additional challenge that can

sometimes make you feel more stressed and on edge. Furthermore, the root of the

problem is considering the symptoms to be normal. Irritability, feeling constantly tired or

on edge, headaches mood swings or insomnia are common signs that something wrong

is going on and cannot be ignored. It is very good to realize that many people among us

might suffer from similar issues. Opening to a friend, someone from your family, or even

consulting an online forum might bring you huge relief. Many fail to remember to take

proper care of their minds. We are constantly reminded to eat well, train, we pick out

nice clothes we look good in - we care about our bodies, but we forget to take care of

the soul. It is extremely important to take some time off occasionally. To unwind, turn off

all social media, slow down. Reading a book, taking a bath, or practicing yoga are some

of the best ways to let the mind take a little rest from the everyday hustle.

Impact of academic disruptions on students it is reasonable to venture those

students who experience reduced motivation toward studies, increased pressures to

learn independently, abandonment of daily routines, and potentially higher rates of

dropout as direct consequences of these measures. Thus, by increasing academic

stressors in a population with heightened pre-existing stress levels and a potentially

reduced ability to rely on typical coping strategies [CITATION Wic11 \l 13321 ].

In the opinion of [ CITATION Oyo20 \l 13321 ], with the online classes, students may

experience challenges as it relates to increased screen time. The root of anxiety is the

mind and body’s way of responding to distress, uneasiness, and unfamiliar situations,
16

being anxiousness can be driven from a place of uncertainty and experiencing the

unknown.

New Normal. According to [ CITATION Kar20 \l 13321 ], what is worth studying after

returning to normality, are the implications that have arisen for the day after, that is,

what adjustments need to be made, the extent of the situation and to define the basic

dimensions of education and learning in formal education systems and organizations

amid educational disruptions. Within the new normal, the situation presents a unique

challenge to every educational leader’s decision-making process. Hence, to sustain

the delivery of quality of instruction to every school.

Schools are influential settings for extra-familial socialization and therefore

important places to satisfy children’s social and psychological needs, such as the innate

need to belong. In case individual’s need of belonging and participation are not

satisfied, the situation might lead into voluntary or involuntary social exclusion. Avoiding

this is of particular concern to societies, not only because of moral reasons and legally

binding curriculum, but also because of long-term impact on social stability and

prosperity [ CITATION Roi18 \l 13321 ].

The above compilation of both international and domestic studies tells advocates

that their proposed study is equivalent to another commonly used framework. As

previously reported, technology has provided us with new options that have supported

us in improving. Interaction is achieved by using computerized systems that are the

product of technical processing.

17

The studies mentioned above are all related to the importance of maintaining all

of one's records and files. It will ensure that these records are protected and available

for the development of New Normal Education and it also guarantees the study of the

Reporters and the Researchers.

Theoretical Lens

This theory states the impact of technology in learning process in setting new

normal education. According to [ CITATION Zwa19 \l 13321 ] , technology has always helped

enhance the simplest of tasks, such as the advancement of the traditional learning

process. A technology that lies under the umbrella of e-learning has made it possible to

continue the learning process during the lockdown. Using Learning Management

System (LMS) in the learning process helps facilitate e-learning as it provides

educational material without the constraint of time or place, enabling the students and

teachers to interact via the internet and facilitates sharing of course-related information

and resources[ CITATION Lon11 \l 13321 ].

Beliefs, attitudes, and intentions are important factors in the adoption of computer

technologies. While contemporary representations have focused on explaining the act

of using computers, the role of learning to use the computer needs to be better

understood within the overall adoption process. Inadequate learning can curtail the

adoption and use of a potentially productive system. We introduce a new theoretical

model, the theory of trying, in which computer learning is conceptualized as a goal

determined by three attitude components: attitude toward success, attitude toward

failure, and attitude toward the process of goal pursuit. Intentions to try and actual trying

are the theoretical mechanisms linking these goal-directed attitudes to goal attainment.
18

This kind of experience are thought to be necessary for developing social learning skills,

like communication and community process. Interaction through e-learning can occur

context in knowledge through network, where group of learners of professionals with a

shared purpose congregate to share information and resources, as well as in

knowledge network, virtual classroom, and asynchronous learning network, asking

questions, solve challenges and accomplish some goals, and in process, they

collectively develop new knowledge and evolve the community practices [ CITATION Dab05

\l 13321 ]. The researcher believes that through Learning Management System (LMS)

the senior high school students can continue to learn despite this pandemic. According

to [ CITATION Sma08 \l 13321 ], we continue to learn, our brains continue to develop and

create new pathways and new connections which are continually shaped, reshaped and

controlled by advancing societal and technological advances.

Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the challenges experienced by the senior high student in the new

normal education?

2. How does the senior high student cope up in this current situation?

3. What significant insights or suggestions that you can share to the

public/audience?

Delimitation and Limitation

19

The focus of this phenomenological study is the learning in the new normal

education in Assumption College of Nabunturan. To conclude with, it was evident that

there is an effect to the learning of learners due to Covid-19 as perceived by the

stakeholders. The study is limited due to some reasons in terms of internet connection

and technical problems that can be uses and essential things when it comes learning

and teaching in new normal education. Consequently, that there was a difficulty on

delivering the lessons completely to the learners for the Senior High school students the

ability to learn the lessons for each subject was not possible and for the parents due to

current situation they agree that there is a difficulty to support children needs and

studies. As a conclusion, Assumption College of Nabunturan Senior High school

students may experience a lot of challenges while attending online class and it can

affect their academic performance and grades.

However, the students are provided with learning materials like modules,

worksheet and textbook that aid in their independent learning process. Students in this

learning modality have common communication channel the modular senior high school

students for messenger and Microsoft teams for online class learning management

system (LMS), or any other social media platforms that give students access to the

learning materials. In addition, findings revealed that the health is risky in the face-to-

face learning with a mean of while the availability of online blended platform was the

main concern of the respondents in the current situation.

Significance of the Study

We are confident that this phenomenological study would add to importance and

significance of helping students to adjust with the new normal setting of education
20

specifically in the institution of Assumption College of Nabunturan. This study may help

the students on how to use the online classes wisely.

Moreover, this knowledge may be helpful on giving more effective and quality

education goal by the Department of Education. This study may help them to make the

school give and promote quality education.

The result of this study can gain benefit or to the following:

Student. The findings of the study may help them to develop their social interaction with

the people they meet online they can also gain more knowledge due to their exposure

to the platform that they can get the information’s easily.

Parents. This may serve to the parents as awareness that they still need to focus on

their child even if they have online classes or modular learning, because this may help

them to make decisions on what they really want to do with the path they want to take.

Teachers. The findings might help the teachers to give them some ideas and

explanation on understanding to help them on how to find the right course for them.

School Administration. This might help them to give more attention and give more

ideas to improve the new normal setting of education.

Future Researchers. May help the future researchers on how to learn and study using

the new setting of education.

Definition of terms

Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application or web-based

technology used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process.

21

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study applied the Qualitative research in using the phenomenological

approach design through the use of interview to gather all the data from the Senior High

students of Assumption College of Nabunturan.

Phenomenology is an approach to qualitative research that focuses of the lived

experience of the individual. The word Phenomenology refers to the study of

phenomena, where a phenomenon is anything that appears to someone in their

conscious experience [ CITATION Mor00 \l 13321 ]. In this study, the interview is led in

gathering the people who have direct information on an occasion, circumstances, or

experience. According to [ CITATION Cre13 \l 13321 ], that conducting a

phenomenological study is necessary for the researcher has experienced, especially

when the researcher has experienced the phenomenon that is under investigation. The

data such as documents, observations or arts may be also used. Phenomenology

attempts to extract the most pure, untainted data in some interpretation of the approach,

bracketing is used be the researcher to document personal experiences with the subject

to help remove him or herself from the process [ CITATION Max13 \l 13321 ].
23

Phenomenology methods are particularly compelling at bringing prior to the

experience and recognitions of the person from their possess point of view and so at

story supposition in this ponder through interview, meet, survey and perception, it can

assemble data. This ponder finds the diverse impacts on the New Normal Education

among the Senior High School students, also the individual experience to share and the

thoughts into prove and information.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at Assumption College of Nabunturan, Davao de

Oro. Assumption College of Nabunturan an institution which is a private school owned

and operate by the daughters of Mary of Assumption fma sisters that has aims of

Christian Education for the Youth. It is located at P-1 Arellano Street, Poblacion

Nabunturan, Davao de Oro. The researchers choose the locality as the focused of the

study easily conduct the survey. Moreover, it is suitable with this study regarding the

career preferences among senior high school students.

In the said school, it has a complete education level such as kindergarten,

Elementary, Junior High, College and Graduate School. The Senior high school

department offers academic track and non-academic track. The said strand of

Academic Track are (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics, (ABM)

Accountancy Business Management, (HUMSS) Humanities and Social Sciences and

(GAS) General Academic Strand while the non-Academic track offers (TVLE) Technical

Vocational Livelihood Education, (SMAW) Shielded Metal Arc Welding and (ICT)

Information Communication Technology.

Role of the Researcher

The role of the researcher in qualitative research is important to engage the

answers that have been seeking thru conducting experiments and research. In this

research, we are qualified to pursue the investigation because we are also the student

who want to seek answer of our co-students in their situation during this COVID-19

pandemic. We also want to gather information to relay to both teachers and instructors

our situation during this event. Besides, we are also a student who can relate to the

situation that they have been facing. Although, I have some biases, but see to it that

theories and related studies are respected and considered.

With regards to the basic roles, we will follow the health protocol, wearing the

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hand sanitizing in conducting the interview to

avoid spreading the virus and to ensure the safety of the participants. Also, we will ask

for permit to conduct this research to the local government and municipal mayor. We

will follow the principles which states that qualitative inquiry is for the researchers who

are willing to commit extensive time to collect data, engage in data analysis, does

reflexivity, and write long passages by themselves. We will distribute the work as a

researcher such as interviewer, transcriber, translator, and encoder. The interviewers

will be the one who will be gathering data thru giving the question provided and help the

participants to make sure they will understand the question. They will use empathy to

make the participants feel more willing to tell their stories and listen to their issues. The

transcriber will be transcribing all recorded answers and will be translated and
26

organized into Standard English statements. The encoder will encode all the statements

including the recorded interviews, the translated and organized statements.

Research Participants

In this study purposive sampling was used. The participants of this study are the

Senior High students at the Assumption College of Nabunturan. In this study we have 5

students as our participants and these participants are from Science, Technology,

Engineering Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy Business Management (ABM),

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), General Academic Strand (GAS), Technical

Vocational Livelihood Education (TVLE).

The purposive sampling is an outstanding tool in conducting interview in

phenomenology research. According to [ CITATION Adl08 \l 13321 ], that the

researcher selects sampling units based on his or her judgement of. All through the

purposive sampling may facilitate considering the whole population of a various

restricted gathering or a division given by people [ CITATION Eng09 \l 13321 ]. In

purposive sampling it does not need to be undertaken in public places nor face to face.

The potential respondents can be reached through an assortment way. The interview

will be conducted through messenger or other social networking sites.

Data Collection

The following steps are applied in gathering the data:

Once we have decided what design our research is how going to be based on it

is imperative that we continue following the systematic procedure.

27

First, through purposive sampling techniques, the members were recognized. They

were mentioned to sign an assent frame and consent to the condition specified that their

interest is deliberate and that they were able to give their insight depending on the

situation in the study.

Second, it is important to mention that we are going to collect data according to

how relevant it can be in the research as well as its effectiveness. We must be aware of

all the possible that there may be throughout the data collection procedure. So, for us to

successfully collect proper data, we have got to make sure we already have clear

criteria for selection.

For this reason, when conducting a research, it is necessary that we take into

consideration whether it is web/online surveys, interviews, and survey questioners to all

respondents, so that we can get our research to hold completely accurate data. Online

surveys have over the course of time, evolved into an effective alternative to expensive

mail or telephone surveys. There are a few conditions which need to be met to online

surveys however that you must be aware. Moreover, not everyone is receptive to an

online survey also. Generally, the demographic segmentation belonging to younger

individuals are inclined towards responding to an online survey.

Then whatever how we will collect data, we must assure it is reliable, consistent,

accurate and we can trust the information. Finally, participant observation is the process

enabling researchers to learn about the activities of the people under study in the

natural setting through observing and participating in those activities. It provides the

context for development of sampling guidelines and interview guides.

28

He believes that "the goal for design of research using participant observation as

a method is to develop a holistic understanding of the phenomena under study that is as

objective and accurate as possible given the limitations of the method”. They suggest

that participant observation be used to increase the validity of the study, as

observations may help the researcher have a better understanding of the context and

phenomenon under study. Validity is stronger with the use of additional strategies used

with observation, such as interviewing, document analysis, or surveys, questionnaires,

or other more qualitative methods. Participant observation can be used to help answer

descriptive research questions, to build theory, or to generate or test

hypotheses[ CITATION DeW02 \l 13321 ].

Data Analysis

In this data analysis we can determine how many students that could handle the

online learning. As we all know online learning can be difficult because we do not have

that enough resources that are needed.

First, the goal of phenomenological research is to understand a particular

experience that many people can relate to. The rise of big data has produced a new

“hyperbolic” phenomenon related to the datafication of society [ CITATION Kit14 \l

13321 ]. The use of this data is help people what are the good effects if we understand

how online learning can be beneficial to many. The datafication phenomenon has also

led to emergent practices in higher education and the consequent need to rethink the

skills required of academics in dealing with this datafication[ CITATION Raf18 \l

13321 ].
29

Second, online learning has also transformed in recent decades. These changes

have impacted students in one way or another depending on how ICTs have been

incorporated into online teaching and how the learning environments have been used

by teachers. These teachings can help the students to develop their skills. These

learning produces a large amount of data. Which are not only generated by students but

also by the technological systems themselves, in the form of things such as metadata.

This is where the real challenge arises

Then in higher education, data mining techniques have spurred on powerful

movements, among which it is particularly important to highlight learning analytics

[ CITATION Buc16 \l 13321 ]. Learning analytics is a tool that can offer us information

about interaction processes between students [ CITATION Cab16 \l 13321 ]. As defined

by Siemens and [ CITATION Gas11 \l 13321 ], “Learning analytics are the

measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about students and their

contexts, in order to understand and optimize learning and environments in which they

occur”.

This shows that not all of us are satisfied when doing online learning because it

needs a lot of money to get the gadgets that we need for this type of learning.

Trustworthiness and Credibility

When we conducted the qualitative research, we put into consideration of the

responses of my information. Moreover, we consider all the details of the information.

We checked and re-check all the transcriptions and the significance of the information

that relate to each other on their topic.

30

To establish trustworthiness and credibility in the study[ CITATION Lic85 \l 13321

], advised that trustworthiness increases the value and strength of the research study,

and they establish the four techniques to assure the reliability of the study, they

establish that trustworthiness of the research and its findings are the central issues in

positivist ideals of validity and reliability. Trustworthiness ensures that research findings

are credible, transferable, dependable, and conformable[ CITATION Ama16 \l 13321 ].

Credibility deals with the focus of the research and refers to the confidence on

how the data address the intended focus [ CITATION Pol12 \l 13321 ].According to

[ CITATION Lic85 \l 13321 ], the credibility standard requires a qualitative study to be

believable to critical readers and to be approved by the persons who provided the

information gathered during the study. [ CITATION Lic85 \l 13321 ], recommend several

techniques inquirers may use to enhance the credibility of their research: prolonged

engagement, persistent observation, triangulation, peer debriefing, negative case

analysis, progressive subjectivity checks, and member checking.

Transferability implies that the strategies and discoveries can be connected to

other ponders in other settings [ CITATION Lic85 \l 13321 ].To do this, you may need to

explicitly the detail in your test, your members, your strategies, and the setting of your

investigate in your strategies. Transferability provides sufficient detail of the context of

the study for the reader to decide whether the prevailing environmental is like another

situation with which he or she is familiar and whether the finding can be justifiably to be

applied [ CITATION She04 \l 13321 ].

Dependability denotes the steadiness of the data over time and the condition of

the study [ CITATION Con16 \l 13321 ]. In achieving the Dependability of the study, the
31

researchers must ensure that the research process is logical, traceable, and clearly

documented. This ensures that the research findings are consistent and could be

repeated.

Conformability is the neutrality or the degree findings that is consistent and that

could be repeated [ CITATION Pol12 \l 13321 ]. According to [CITATION Mal14 \l

13321 ], Conformability includes an audit trail that includes raw data, such as

electronically record materials, written field notes, documents and records.

Conformability is achieved when findings of a study reflect from the participants of the

study and make sure the data speaks for itself, and us not based on biases and

assumptions of the researchers.

Ethical Consideration

The main concerns of my study were individuals who are custody on the code of

ethics, they are our co-students of Assumption College of Nabunturan, and they are

both senior high schools. We must [ CITATION Ioa08 \l 13321 ]ensure that they will not lose

their trust and ensure their safety, especially in this pandemic. The full protection will be

guaranteed so that they will be safe and secure. We will follow the ethical standards in

conducting this study as pointed by [CITATION Boy05 \l 13321 ], these are the following:

respect for persons, beneficence, justice, consent, and confidentiality.

Respect in others is an obligation of a researcher not to expose the weaknesses

of the participants. We must maintain friendship, trust, and confidence among them.

Beforehand, we will ask permission to the participants and to their parents to where the
32

data belongs to. This will be done to pay respect to the participants who are concerned

to this study.

Consent is another most important way of showing respect to persons during

research [CITATION Cre12 \l 13321 ]. This is to let the participants know what the

purpose and the objectives of the students are. We will write a written consent to get

their approval. After getting their answers, the interview will come after, and they will be

participating. Of course, they were informed on the results and findings of the study.

Beneficence requires a commitment of minimizing risks to the research

participants rather maximizing the profits that are due to them. Anonymity of the

interviewee was kept in order not to put each participant into risks. At all times,

participants were protected, so all files of information were not left unattended or

unprotected [ CITATION Bri07 \l 13321 ].

Confidentiality towards the results and findings including the safeguard of the

participants, coding system were used. Identities will not be forced to be exposed their

rights to be confidential is guaranteed. [ CITATION Mar07 \l 13321 ] recommended that

“All materials including videotapes, encoded transcripts, notes, and others should be

destroyed after the data were being analyzed.” Some of the participant might be

hesitant to be interview because they might afraid what to say which will become a

hindrance in exposing their stories and to acquire the goal of this study.

Justice requires a reasonable allocation of the risks and benefits as results of the

research. It is very important to acknowledge the contributions of all the participants as

they generally part of the success of the research. They must be given due credits in all

their endeavors [ CITATION Blo06 \l 13321 ]. They will be thanked for their cooperation and
33

support to achieve the findings and the success of this study. I am hoping that through

this study, the stories will be heard and will be paid attention to enable to maintain the

good relation to both student and teachers regarding to this study.
