Back Pressure Exhaust

This document summarizes calculations for back pressure on an exhaust pipe system for a gas-fired power plant engine. It calculates elbow and pipe lengths, flow rate, and resulting back pressure of 2.11 x 10-6 mBar. It also calculates ventilation needs for the engine room, estimating a required airflow of 120,000 m3/hr to dissipate heat from the main engines, generators, and other equipment. Finally, it describes failures of flexible exhaust joints on one main engine, replaced with local products that ruptured after 8 hours of testing.

AIR SUPPLY CALCULATION IN ENGINE ROOM AT 117 m

Ventilation Purpose two to five percent of fuel consumed by an engine is lost as heat
radiated to the
surrounding air. In addition, heat from generator inefficiencies and exhaust piping
can easily equal engine
radiated heat. Any resulting elevated temperatures in the engine room may
adversely affect
maintenance personnel, switchgear, and generator set performance.

Air Quantity Required

In general, changing the air in the engine room every one or two minutes will be
adequate,
if flow routing is proper.
Combustion air would be required solely for burning the fuel in the combustion
process.
Hence the total air intake into the engine room would be the sum of both the
combustion air
and the cooling air.

Required Air Flow

Engine room ventilation can be estimated by the following formula. assuming 38°C
(100°F)
ambient air temperature:

V = H / ( D x Cp x ΔT ) + Combustion Air

Where : V = Ventilating Air (m³/m, cfm)

H = Heat Radiation i.e. engine, generator, aux (kW, Btu/min)
D = Density of Air at 25°C (kg/m³, lb/ft³)
Cp = Specific Heat of Air (kW·min/kg·K, Btu/lbs/°F)
ΔT = Permissible temperature rise in engine room (°C, °F)

1. For Main Engine

From M/E technical information;
air consumtion = 18,107 m³/h
air required to dissipate
heat radiation = 23,330 m³/h
(Total For 2 Main Engine) = 82,874 m³/h

2. For Generator

> Heat Radiation

HR = P x ((1/eff) - 1)
Where : P = 400 kW (Generator Output)
eff = 0.95 (Generator Efficiency)

HR = 400 x ((1/0.95) - 1)
= 21,04 kW
D = 1.099 kg/m³
Cp = 0,017 kW x min/kg x K
ΔT = 10 °C

V = HR / ( D x Cp x ΔT )
= 21,04 / (1.099 x 0,017 x 10) m³/m
= 21.04 / 0,187 m³/m
= 112,51 m³/m
= 6751,8 m³/h
(For 3 Generator) = 20252,41 m³/h

> Combustion Air Volume = 37,5 m³/m

(For 3 Generator) = 112,5 m³/m
= 6750 m³/h
(Total For 3 Generator) = 27002,4 m³/h
3. Misc Equipment

> Heat Radiation

HR = P x ((1/eff) - 1)
Where : P = 400 kW (Misc Eq. Output)
eff = 0.95 (Misc. Eq. Effeciency)
HR = 400 x ((1/0.95) - 1)
= 21.04 kW
D = 1.099 kg/m³
Cp = 0.017 kW x min/kg x K
ΔT = 10 °C
V = HR / ( D x Cp x ΔT )
= 21.04 / (1.009 x 0.17 x 10 ) m³/m
= 112.51 m³/m
(Total For Misc Equipment) = 6750,6 m³/h

Total Supply for Engine Room = 6750,6 + 27002,4 + 82.874

= 116.627 ≈ 120.000 m³/hr

SELECT FAN WITH CAPACITY = 2 x 60000 m³/hr
