Course Objectives:
Accounting is regarded as a dynamic discipline and forms an integral part of the Management
Reporting System to provide Management the necessary accounting information to operate the
business successfully. Accounting is the language of business and the accounting function is vital to
every segment of our society. The course focuses to acquaint the students with the accounting terms,
concepts and processes that give shape to the financial statements. The main goal of financial
accounting is to create the financial statements which are useful to the external parties/various
stakeholders in measuring the financial wellbeing of the businesses. Understanding these reported
financial statements develops the students' ability to assess managerial performance and financial
soundness of the businesses for financial decision-making at local and global level. This course also
enables the students sensitize about ethical and sustainability accounting. The course shall provide:
-Quantification and visualizing the economic value of a business is central to the general management
function.
-A practical overview of both the accounting and finance functions of the business will be the major
focus.
Emphasis will be on evidence-based managerial decision-making using accounting

Introduction to Accounting: Objectives, scope & importance of accounting, Basic organizational
forms and structures, Accounting as an information system, Users of accounting information,
Management Accounting vs. Cost Accounting and Financial Accounting.
Conceptual Framework of Financial Accounting: Accounting concepts & conventions, Generally
accepted accounting principles- Indian AS & IFRS, Accounting equation, Double entry system, Rules
for debit-credit, Types and classification of accounts, Concept of capital & revenue, Recognition of
incomes and expenses, Valuation and Accounting for inventories & fixed assets, Depreciation,
impairment and amortization.
Process & Preparation of Financial Statements: Accounting process & cycle, Journal & sub-
division of Journal, Ledger, Trial balance, Preparation of corporate financial statements: Balance
Sheet, Income Statement/Profit or Loss Account, Cash Flow Statement, Corporate Disclosure
Policies, Notes to accounts & significant accounting policies, Quarterly Financial Reports.
Analysis of Financial Statements: Comparative Statements, Common Size Statements, Ratio
Analysis, Du-Pont Analysis.
Ethical and Sustainability Accounting: Ethical Issues, Corporate Governance in India,
Sustainability accounting: framework, benefits & process.
