Problem Statement

This document presents a problem statement for simulating and modeling traffic congestion at Shandar Chowk intersection in Jhelum City, Pakistan. It provides background on increased population and vehicles leading to traffic issues. The problem is traffic jams at peak hours from 12-2PM with many schools and shops nearby. The methodology proposes an intelligent traffic light system that adjusts light times based on vehicle interarrival times to reduce congestion, with longer green lights for more vehicles. A simulation model will be developed and tested to evaluate this solution.

Problem Statement for Simulation and Modelling

Simulation and modelling, advantages achieved through usage:

It refers to the process of analyzing and creating a digital prototype of physical model to
predict its performance in real world.
Advantages:
 Using simulation and modelling we would be able to reconstruct whole problem into
a smaller scale for analysis.
 It enables us to apply the techniques and formulates the prototype more effectively
instead of direct implementation of solutions on the problem.
 Being the students of software engineering it would be far more help for us to
showcase the whole research and solution to the action authorities instead for trying to
convince them orally.
 The result or outcome from this technique are accurate in general and, compared to
the analytical model.

Background:
For the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the traffic and population.in
the heart of Jhelum city having densely populated area the congestion of traffic has been
raised to a major problem. The improved living standard and income of people have enabled
them to facilitate themselves in many aspects. The number of increased private cars and
vehicles has damaged the regular flow of traffic in addition to other transport. also, the
increased population has urged people to setup their sources of income embedded with the
city. There has been a significant increase in the use of public transport. All these factors
have led to increase in the traffic density and affected the flow of traffic. Moreover, increase
in the vehicles have led to many environmental problems and hazards as well as traffic jams.

Problem:
We have chosen the Shandar Chowk of Jhelum City as our problem for traffic congestion.
Shandar Chowk is an intersection of four roads.
On the left side of Shandar Chowk there are Akram Shaheed Park, Ambulance Rescue center
and many small shops and stalls covering the boundary of roadsides. As the number of small
shops and stalls are in great number, the park being a source of pleasure many of the people
are connected to them. The width for road is reduced causing the normal flow of traffic
disturbed.
On the right side of Shandar Chowk the road provides main entrance to the bazaar of Jhelum
city. Due to main bazar of Jhelum, there is high density of people making the roadblock and
queues of vehicles as a result the right side of Chowk is always full and traffic jam.
On the top side of Shandar Chowk there are Iman Bargarh and Main Mosque of Jhelum city
area, tech shops and fire brigade office. A lot of rural people used this side coming from rural
areas.
On the bottom side of Shandar Chowk, if anyone wants to enter the city it provides the main
entrance for people, also the people belonging to the city areas. There are no traffic lights on
this chowk. So that is why due to all reason this chowk is always busy. Congestion or traffic
jams mostly occur at intersections and at peak hours when there is a greater number of the
vehicles.
The peak hour of the traffic congestion is usually from 12pm to 2 pm as this is schools and
colleges dispersal time. So pickup service vehicles for the school and colleges are increased
at that time. This leads to an increase in the number of vehicles on the four sides of Shandar
Chowk which leads to the congestion on the intersection. We would try to iterate the research
depending upon our project factorsi
Problem Statement:
Simulation model for traffic congestion management.

Methodology: -
The proposed methodology for the problem is concluded through the research papers studied
so far.
 an intelligent model for traffic light system to avoid the traffic congestion problem event in
the peak time of traffic flow.
 They used the Interarrival time of vehicles on the traffic lights to decide the time of Red and
green lights of traffic.
 They proposed if the inter arrival time of vehicles is less than 3 seconds then the green light
time is 95 and red-light time is 65.
 If it is between 3 and 1.7 second, then green light will remain on 110 seconds and red light 65
seconds.
 If it is between 0 and 1.7 second, then green light will remain on 125 seconds and red light 65
seconds.
 If it is between is exceptional then lights times will be manual.
 They used this approach on different cities and build a simulation to test the proposed
solution.
 By using this method, the simulation result is quite good that gives the inter departure time of
vehicles 0.6 seconds.
 As on the peak hours some vehicles must wait on the traffic light for two turns on green lights
and sometime the vehicles reach the next traffic too early, and it must face every red Light.
 To avoid the traffic congestion and reduce the waiting time of the traffic a model that control
the traffic light base on the demand by the traffic density in the Realtime will be build.
 This traffic model will work in heavy traffic mode in such a way that it will allow large
number of groups of the vehicle to cross the road at one time hence reduce the waiting time of
the vehicle (such that vehicle will wait to make a better group) so that there will be no
frequent switching of Red and Green lights
 And then we build a Simulation model to check the effectiveness of the proposed solution.
