Video Resume
Module covered: Module 5
Marks allocated: 5
Objectives: Students should demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry.
This assignment is good preparation for answering the common interview question, Tell Me About
Yourself. Video resume is a way for you to showcase your personality, create a great first
impression, and emphasise your talent and skills.
Steps:
You will create an approximately 2-minute video resume in which you “sell” your personal
soft skills to a potential employer.
How do you exhibit each of these skills?
* You will demonstrate critical thinking to plan and complete this task.
* If you search “Video Resume” in Youtube, you will find many examples.
Be sure that:
Use your video to show and tell employers what they can’t discover from a paper resume alone.
Be honest and engaging.
Have A Script
It is important to organize your thoughts, especially before speaking in front of a camera. The
script can either be written out or an outline of the main points.
Now that you have your script, practice it until you’re comfortable with a delivery that appears
natural and smooth.
Your Introduction
First impressions are important. Be aware of your attire, body language, and facial expressions. A
smile goes a long way.
Opening line Example: “Hello, my name is ____ and I’m your next digital media specialist.”
Focus on two distinct areas; your technical skills and accomplishments and your personal
characteristics that make you stand out. With technical skills, show examples of your
work. With personal characteristics, focus on work ethic, collaborative skills, and your unique
strengths.
Example: “I’ve used Photoshop and Illustrator to create websites for client X,Y,Z. I've created
marketing videos using name your software. I show up early, stay late, have creative ideas, work
well with others and I will bring solutions to the challenges at your company.”
Your Closing
Provide a re-cap of your main selling points. Make sure to repeat your name and thank the
prospective employer for their time.
Example: “Thank you for watching my Profile Video. I’m confident my skills and previous
experience will help me produce even more results for your company. If you’re interested or have
any questions, feel free to connect with me or even invite me to a video interview. I look forward
to hearing from you.”
