Assignment # 01 17EL Sec-1, II, III

This document contains 5 questions regarding power system protection schemes for an electrical engineering assignment. Question 1 asks to explain distance, motor, bus bar, feeder, and cable protection schemes with circuit diagrams. Question 2 asks about different types of electromagnetic relays and their circuit diagrams. Question 3 asks about different types of oil circuit breakers, their advantages and disadvantages, and arc quenching phenomena. Questions 4 and 5 ask to design impedance relay protection schemes for transmission line systems, determining settings for 3 zones based on line parameters and reaching specified percentages of the line.

Assignment # 01 for 17EL (All Sections) Submission Date: 13-09-2021

CLO-2 Assessed
Q:1. Explain the following protection schemes with the help of suitable circuit diagrams.
1. Distance / Impedance Protection
2. Motor Protection
3. Bus bar Protection
4. Feeder Protection
5. Cable Protection
Q: 2. What are the different types of relays? With the help of necessary circuit diagram, discuss
different types of electromagnetic relays as shown in figures.

Q: 3. What are the different types of oil circuit breaker? Explain each type in detail along with the
relative advantages and disadvantages. Also describe the phenomena of arc quenching in each type
of oil circuit breaker?
Q: 4. A 250-kV transmission system has positive-sequence impedances of 3 + j25 and 3.5 + j30
Ω of the lines TL12 and TL23 respectively. If the maximum peak load supplied by the line TL12 is
150 MVA with a lagging power factor of 0.85, design a three-zone distance relaying scheme for
the R12 impedance relay by determining the following:

(i) Maximum load current

(ii) CT ratio
(iii) VT ratio
(iv) Impedance measured by the relay
(v) Load impedance based on secondary ohms
(vi) Zone1 setting of relay R12
(vii) Zone2 setting of relay R12
(viii) Zone 3 setting of relay R12.
Q: 5.(a) The system shown in the figure is fed by two generators G1 and G2, G1 at bus A and G2
at 70% distance from A in section AB. The currents I a and Ib supplied by them
respectively are equal. The reactance of the transformer is 10%. The line voltages and
impedances are shown in the figure. Find the settings for the impedance relay for first,
second and third zone adjusting the first zone to reach 80%, second zone to reach 50%.
CTs and PTS have ratios 400/5 and 166000/110 respectively. Show the effect of infeed
on the setting relays and protection.

Q: 5.(b) The system is shown in the figure given below and it is fed by the generator at bus
A. The reactance of the transformer is 10%. The line voltages and impedances are
shown in the figure. Find the settings for the impedance relays for first, second and
third zone adjusting the first zone to reach 80%, second zone to reach 50%. C.T’s
and P.T’s have ratios 400/5 and 166000/110 V respectively. Also draw their
characteristics on R-X diagram.
