Given y = f(x) and let a be in the domain of f. Then f(a) represents the
second element in the pair of defining f, or the value of the function at x = a. The value
of f(a) is obtained by replacing x by a in f(x).
Examples:
Find: a. f(1)
b. f(-1)
c. f(-3)
Solutions:
= 2(1) – 3(1) – 5 + 2
=2–3–5+2
= -4
Find:

Example:
a. f(x) + g(x)
b. f(x) – g(x)
c. f(x) . g(x)
d. f(x) / g(x)
Solution :
= x2 + 1 + x 2 – x
= 2x2 –x + 1
= x2 + 1 - x 2 + x
=x+1
= x4 – x 3 + x2 – x
f (x ) x 2+1
d. =
g ( x) x 2−x
Exercise:
a. f(x) + g(x)
b. f(x) – g(x)
c. f(x) . g(x0
d. f(x) / g(x)
1. f(x) = 2x -5
g(x) = 3x – 4
2. f(x) = x2 – 4
g(x) = x + 2
3. f(x) = 4 – x
g(x) = 2x + 1
