Qualities of Scientific Literate People and Scientific Attitude and


Values
Week 3

Introduction This module intends to describe the attributes of scientific literate


people and the attitudes and values expected to be possessed by one. These
qualities are considered important to be developed among future science
teachers both in the elementary and secondary levels. In a way, the
understanding of these important attitudes and values will also promote
science not only as focused on the development of processes and skills but
more of values and attitudes. Specifically, in this module the students
should be able to:

A. Characterize the qualities and attributes of scientifically


literate individuals
B. Identify the desired qualities to be developed by a science
teacher in the primary grades
C. Describe ways to integrate scientific attitudes and values in
teaching science

Explore A. Read on the following text and characterize what a scientifically


(Tasks/Activities) literate people is. Likewise, discern what scientific attributes need to be
possessed by an individual especially those aspiring science teachers.

Qualities of Scientific Literate People

• Beliefs- A scientist believes that everything that happens in the


world has cause or scientific reason.

• Curiosity- A scientist shows interest to dig into "Why" of


Phenomena. He/She pays particular attention to objects or events.

• Objectives- A scientist is objective. She/ he does not allow his


/her feelings and biases to influence his/her recording of
observations, interpretation of influence data and formulation of
conclusions.

• Critical Mindedness- A scientist bases suggestions and


conclusions on evidence. When in doubt, she/he questions the
veracity of a statement in relation to the evidence presented.

• Open Mindedness- A scientist listen to and respects the ideas of


others. He/she accepts criticism and changes his/her if reliable
evidence contradicts his/her beliefs.

• Inventiveness- A scientist can generate new and original ideas.

• Risk-Taking- A scientist is willing to take risk but calculated risk.


He/she expresses his opinions and tries new ideas even at the risk
of failure and criticism.
• Intellectual honesty- A scientist gives a truthful report of
observations. He/she does not withhold important information just
to please himself/herself or others.
• Humility- A scientist is humble when he/she admits that he/she is
not free from committing errors. A person recognizes that there
may be better ideas and realizes that there are individuals whom
he/she may have to consult to arrive in a correct observations and
conclusions.

• Responsibility- A scientist actively participates in that task of


making this world safer and more human by caring the
environment. A person is dutifully performing task assigned to
him/her.

Integration of Scientific Attitudes and Values in Teaching Science


may be done by:

• Critical problem Solving

-Develop their reflective thinking skills

-Build their knowledge and intuition base

-Use triggers

• Innovation of Beneficial products

-New ideas

-Creative thoughts

-New imaginations in forms of device

• Environmental care

-It offers opportunities for experimental learning outside of the


classroom

-Enables the students to apply their learning in the real world

• Conservation of resources

-Ethical use and protection of natural resources

• Enhancement of integrity and wellness


• Informed decision making and

• Discussion of relevant issues that involve science, technology


and environment.

1. In your opinion as a future science teacher, which among the scientific


attitudes should be primarily developed/acquired by one? Identify at least
three most important attribute for you to possessed.

2. How will you develop these scientific attitudes and values among your
pupils? Cite some concrete examples.
