Thesis Statement Practice

Decide if the following are good thesis statements or not. Write yes if it is a good
one. Write no if it is a weak thesis statement. Remember, a good thesis statement
will:
• have a topic and a controlling idea.
• be arguable.
• not be too broad or vague.
• not be too narrow.
• not announce the topic.
NOTE: Kindly give a justification to every answer.

1. Cancer is a bad disease. – No because it is too broad


2. Some children have to walk to school. - No because it does not have a topic and

have a topic and controlling idea.
8. This essay will explain why college tuition rates are increasing. – No because it
does not have controlling idea.
9. It is necessary because children need help and need to be safe. – No because it
does not have topic sentence
10. Political fighting prevents the government from functioning properly. – No
because it is too narrow.
