Professional Socialization Is The Process Whereby New Nurses Learn and Internalize The Knowledge

Professional socialization is the process by which new nurses learn the values, skills, and norms of the nursing profession. It helps nurses understand the importance of respecting patients and effective communication. Positive socialization creates a supportive learning environment that motivates learners. Professional socialization is the process whereby new nurses learn and

internalize the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and norms of their profession that

guide their behaviour in their professional role (Howskins &Ewens,1999; Gaudine &

Lamb, 2015). Socialization enables nurses to understand the importance of respecting

persons and therapeutic communication. It provides nurses with the characteristics of

the profession that the clients recognize and expect from them (Gaudine & Lamb, 2015).

Also, it helps students to identify and prioritize their values and beliefs. Challenging

classrooms and practice setting help nurses to model behaviours and attitudes.

Professional socialization plays an important role in developing nursing identity

(Zarshenas et al., 2014). Positive socialization makes the learning process more

pleasurable and creates a better learning environment that motivates the learners.

"Nurses who eat their young ones" does not literally refer to nurses being

cannibalistic to other nurses; instead, it is an idiom that has been used by nurses

internationally to describe bullying. Unfortunately, bullying is one of the major problems

that create difficulties in recruiting and retaining nurses in the profession. I have seen

many nurses who dropped their profession only because of bullying. In my perception,

the main reason for bullying is ineffective communication. So proper interventions should

be adopted to eradicate bullying behaviour from the profession.

Successful transitioning of nurses to the workplace is essential for nurses to

perform well. I believe educating the staff members about the need for a positive work

environment will facilitate positive socialization. According to Gaudine and Lamb (2015),

poorly treated nurses may behave similarly to others. The positive experience that

nurses receive from their mentors, educators, and preceptors helps them to see things

proactively and will have significant influence in retaining nurses in the profession.

Teachers and mentors could be role to other nurses, making them understand what
professional behaviour is expected from them. Moreover, interactive learning provides

opportunities to socialize with others from different backgrounds and get to learn the

hidden cultures of the profession (Jawula Salisu et al., 2019).

In my perspective, a supportive environment means a workplace where my values

and beliefs are respected and a place that allows me to think, act, and perform

independently. I remember the enormous support that I had received from my senior

nurses which helped me to adapt to the new workplaces. Ideals such as skilled

communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing,

meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership help create a supportive environment

(Duquesne University, 2020).

Overall, positive socialization is necessary to create a supportive and healthy work

environment.
