CP210x USB To UART Bridge

This document discusses a CP210x USB to UART bridge module that allows users to connect serial devices to a computer via USB. It uses the CP2102 chip from Silicon Labs to act as a bridge between USB and UART serial communication protocols. Key features include reliable RS485 communication, automatic switching between transmit and receive modes, and the ability to connect over long twisted pair cables up to 1.2 km. The module installs as a virtual COM port on Windows computers, allowing users to communicate with serial devices over USB without needing a native serial port.

CP210x USB to UART Bridge

USB to USB Converter is an intelligent module which connects to a PC USB

port providing a high-speed asynchronous RS-232 serial port. The USB
Converter provides easy connectivity between the PC and standard
communication ports, not requiring any PC reconfiguration, assignment of IRQs
or jumper settings.

The USB to RS232 module is a cost-effective way to convert RS232 industrial

buses to a USB interface. When connected to a PC USB port the USB to RS232
module is automatically detected and is installed as a native COM port which is
compatible with any existing serial communication application. Multiple
modules can be installed when using USB hubs thus allowing a hassle-free
configuration of a multi serial system.

CP2102 chip from SiLabs is a single chip USB to UART bridge IC. It requires
minimal external components. CP2102 can be used to migrate legacy serial port
based devices to USB. This module helps all those who are comfortable with
RS232/Serial Communication protocol, to build USB devices very easily.

This is an USB2.0 to TTL UART Converter module which is based on CP2102

Bridge by SiLabs. This module can be used with Laptop's which don't have
standard serial port.

 Reliable RS485 link
 Automatic Switching between Transmit/Receive modes of RS485.
 Twisted pair cable can work up to 1.2 Km distance.
 Ground Output for wire shielding.
 USB Powered
 USB Port Pluggable type
 Designed for industrial environment

Specifications
 Any baud rate from 1200 bps to 115 kbps
 Current: 100mA current at 5V DC taken from PC’s USB Port
 Modes: RS-485 Half Duplex (2-wire)
 Built in terminal resistor of 120R Ohm
 Length of twisted pair cable maximum can be 1.2 Km (Kilometer)
Maximum
 Cable type for optimal range: Two cores, Twisted Pair Shielded type, D+
and D- should be twisted with each other to get optimal range.

USB Driver Software

USB drivers for the following operating systems are available for Windows XP,
Windows7/8-32 Bit and 64 Bit. Download USB Driver and install it. Start USB
Driver Setup finish setup. Plug in unit to PC’s USB port.

You can open Start > Device and Printer menu to see the installed Port to which
software can connect. A com port should also appear in Device Manager under
Ports.
This module creates a virtual COM port using USB on your computer which
can support various standard Baud Rates for serial communication. You just
need to install the driver using a setup file which automatically installs correct
driver files for Windows XP/Vista/ 7. After driver installation, plug the module
into any USB port of your PC. Finally a new COM port is made available to the
PC. The feature which makes it more convenient is the TTL level data i/o. So
you don't need to make a RS232 to TTL converter using chips like MAX232.
The Rx and Tx pin can be connected directly to the MCUs pins (assuming 5v
i/o).
