Module 5 Reflection

If I was the narrator, I will stay in the Christian town and continue my studies. I will
persevere to learn all about the world outside the green area. I can use this knowledge to help
protect my mountain people, the Lumads. After obtaining the knowledge I got from the
Christians, I can teach it to the mountain people. I will try my best for the Christian people to
acknowledge me as an equal. This can avert an all-out war with the Christians and the
mountain people. I can protect my home without using violence. I can be a representative of
our tribe to persuade the Christians to not take our land. I can promote minority rights and
empower minority groups.
Even nowadays, people still discriminate ethnic groups such as Lumads. They do not
treat them as an equal. Just because they lack knowledge and education, people see them as
their inferior. Just because they have dark skin, they have their own beliefs, and they live in
the mountains, does not mean that they are not like us. Ethnic groups or ethnic people are
also human beings. They can also learn, and study like us. Not because you have power, you
have the right to discriminate people. All of us are born free and equal and should be treated
the same way. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are
endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of
brotherhood. Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration,
without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other
opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. Furthermore, no distinction
shall be made based on the political, jurisdictional, or international status of the country or
territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or
under any other limitation of sovereignty. This should be clearly applied also to minority
groups. Generally, under human rights instruments, rights are granted to ‘everyone’ without
discrimination of any kind. Thus, minorities (national or ethnic, religious, and linguistic
minorities) should enjoy all rights including the right to social security on the same footing as
most of the population.
People should start respecting one another. God created us as equals so we should
play our part. Just because minority groups have their own beliefs, we should still think of
them as our equals. Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal
opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. We should not steal freedom from
them. Minorities also are people who have families just like us. People who are treated fairly
and have equal opportunity are better able to contribute socially and economically to the
community, and to enhance growth and prosperity. An equal and fair society is likely to be
safer by reducing entrenched social and economic disadvantage. Crucially, a society that is
fair and equal also helps improve all other public value outcomes.
